Movie Reviews of Nine QueensMovie Review: Human nature and the Argenine economy. Good caper film. Summary: 5 Stars
This 2000 Argentine import is a caper film that kept my eyes glued to the screen. Yes, nothing is what it seems. And the twists and turns in the plot require utmost concentration. And then, just when I thought I had it all figured out, everything changes again.
I think the script was wonderful. And so was the acting and directing. The pacing is excellent too. And everything moved along swiftly. There seems to be a plot within a plot within a plot. And everything is revealed just a little at a time.
The Nine Queens of the title refers to a sheet of counterfeit stamps. But there are questions raised about these stamps also. Nothing in this film is what it seems. And yet, it is put together in an extremely coherent fashion.
It's about human nature, of course. But then, it's also a bit about the Argentine economy. You have to see it to understand. Definitely recommended.
Movie Review: Even better than all the hype Summary: 5 Stars
I am always hesitant to see a movie after it receives so many rave reviews, becuase it is often dificult for such movies to meet my expectations. This film, is one of the few examples in which it actually exceeded all of the hype. It's a con movie, in the tradition of classics like "The Sting" but it moves much quicker. It's not until the credits start rolling that the viewer gets an idea of how complete the heist was and exactly who was in charge. I saw this movie first in Europe, and was incredibly disappointed that it was not released in the US, so I could watch it again, because it is a movie that you can watch again and again and gather more clues with each viewing. I was sad to hear that a US company bought the rights to the story. It will be difficult for them no to butcher it, because this was perfect.
Movie Review: One of the very best Summary: 5 Stars
Nine Queens will test your imagination and observation powers, lest you the viewer be tricked. It is a wickedly clever film written by a genius and acted by absolutely top talent. The story line deals with two scoundrels who are small time con men, conning the citizens of Buenos Aires and each other. "Fate" brings them the con of their lives. Although what you see is in this fast moving film is perfectly clear, what is actually taking place is not completely revealed until the last scene. A perfect movie: thrilling, warm, criminal, shocking, slick and funny. It raised my anxiety level sufficiently that I bought the movie to find the tells that are in the film. It was also the first movie for me in which a rapid-fire phrase in Argentine Espanol slang was crystal clear to my ears - buen culo, eh.
Movie Review: A really fun Spanish flick! Summary: 5 Stars
I just happened upon this movie at the library and decided to give it a shot not knowing what to expect beforehand. Within the first 20 minutes I was hooked. We go from scam to scam, watching two conmen (the younger of which is the spitting image of Dave Matthews) pull off small jobs. It's later that we watch them attempt something really ambitious -- a "once in a lifetime job."
The plot is great, the Spanish is also really easy to pick up since the actors speaker exceptionally clearly. That Argentinian "jsho" for "yo" is really audible :)
The movie is an all around great film for most everyone. Despite the R rating, there's no violence other than a few punches to the stomach and the occassional bad language.
Movie Review: A great Con Movie- Made in Argentina- the Hollywood replica does not cut it Summary: 5 Stars
Ever since I began studying the Influence methods, I truly enjoy seeing and reseeing con movies, because you can really tell how well documented the movie is in this aspect.
Nine Queens is not only an encyclopedia in con techniques, but is also so well acted.. you can feel the astuteness of the swindlers, yet feel the "eagerness of the rookie", the conceited and psychopathic nature the character played by Ricardo Darín, almost to the point of "hating the guy" thoughout the whole movie.. No I am not going to give anything away.
I saw the Hollywood version and , though no two movies are alike, the excellence of the argentinian original just overshadows it.
