Movie Reviews of Nightwish: End of an Era

Movie Review: Wow..
Summary: 5 Stars

I've seen quite a few live DVD's, and this one is by far the best. If youäre into symphonic metal, buy it!

Movie Review: End of an Era
Summary: 5 Stars

Great concert . . very entertaining, a must for Nightwish fans. Tarja is superb.

Movie Review: Great music, singing gets old
Summary: 4 Stars

While I'd heard many songs by Nightwish, I hadn't purchased any of their albums. I decided to purchase this DVD as it was the final performance for their lead singer with the band. Musically, this band is as good as any out there. The melodies ebb and flow nicely, with great themes. While I enjoy Tarja's voice on some songs, on others it's just too much. Didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the concert, but, the operatic style tends to wear thin after awhile. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and will enjoy it many more times in the future. Perhaps more of the bass player singing would have pushed it to five stars. If you enjoy this type of music, then this is definitely for you. Special Features are kind of interesting, if you speak Finnish. Following the band on the last 3 weeks of the tour would have been much more interesting if there was subtitling so you knew what they were saying. Overall, I would buy this DVD again and will prompt others to buy it.

Movie Review: Excellent concert DVD with technical shortcomings.
Summary: 4 Stars

A supremely enjoyable concert DVD for Nightwish fans and newbies alike. In particular their cover of "High Hopes" off of "Division Bell" is outstanding. The content of the DVD would've easily warranted five stars, but the occasionally hyperactive editing and cheap gimmicks as well as having a disc full of widescreen material, yet delivered in non-anamorphic letter box format detracts from the enjoyment. Also be sure to turn on 5.1 audio, as the disc plays as two channel audio by default. The documentary on the disc isn't particularly interesting, basically just being a whole lot of backstage footage that shows the atmosphere rather than imparting any insights into the band or members.

Movie Review: Great music. Video editing is awful
Summary: 4 Stars

I am a fan of this excellent band. Music is great in both performance and quality of audio.
Compared to the previous DVD "From Wishes to Eternity" in this one they did a better job in synchronizing audio to video, now it looks like Tarja is really singing.
However, I give the worst rating to the video editing because on fast songs they change the camera angle/image every 2 seconds which becomes very annoying. They tried to do something fun or creative but maybe they were on drugs or just had too much caffeine. The fast change in images gets your eyes tired so you might as well turn off the TV and just listen to the audio.
