Movie Reviews of NightbreedMovie Review: slick Summary: 4 Stars
Heres a really cool looking movie that just misses 5 stars. If only it darkened the mood and played up the sinister aspects instead of the fantasy...oh well. Its still excellent. The story involves boone and his belief that he is responsible for a series of murders. Through a bizarre turn of events, he seeks out midian, "where the monsters live..." for refuge. But there is someone else who also seeks out midian, the evil "buttonhead", whos mission is to destroy midian and those who dwell there. As with other clive barker films, there is more than meets the eye here. Moral issues about what constitutes humanity and who the real monsters are are fleshed out as the film progresses. The film lacks a central protagonist (such as Pinhead in hellraiser or NIx in Lord of Illusions) and instead opts to focus on mankind as the force that drives the film. Barker holds up the mirror and we can see ourselves both in man and in the breed. The Dvd Is clear and crisp, with the score really standing out. There isn't a whole lot in the way of features other than a theatrical trailer and some cast notes.
Movie Review: This is the "Studio Cut" of the film. Summary: 4 Stars
In 1990 Clive Barker set out to faithfully adapt his novella, "Cabal" to the screen. Very little was changed, very little left out and all boundries of sex and violence where left at the door. The the studio came along an 45 minutes of footage was removed, leaving a dry, emotionaly devoid, steamroller of a film where a mini-epic should have stood.
That film is here, and it's Nightbreed.
Now, 18 years later the 45 minutes of footage is found, but the audience needs to demand it be restored:
[...]
It's time to restore the print, the missing footage, the dated sound and bring this to blu-ray glory so that this film can finally get the recognition and attention it deserves.
Clive Barker is a great writer / director who has been and continues to be tortured by the Hollywood bloodsucker that bring us re-makes and ingore the original art.
This DVD serves as a placeholder on your library shelf, until the true vision can be seen.
Movie Review: Pretty good. Summary: 4 Stars
The first hour of this movie is actually really great. But after that, it gets a little messy and, frankly, a little too "Hollywood-ized." It almost feels tacked on. I feel Clive Barker's next film, Lord Of Illusions, would suffer the same way. It's like he was rushing to wrap things up.
Other than that, this is a solid piece of entertainment. Barker's knack for visual flair is on fine display here and the film is never boring because of it. Danny Elfman provides a thumping score. And how could you resist David Cronenberg as a masked psycho?
Recommended to horror/fantasy fans, but I hope Barker is eventually able to release his director's cut as I feel Nightbreed has the potential to improve greatly with those extra 25 minutes of footage.
Movie Review: Clive Barker's Cabal Summary: 4 Stars
Barker directed this surreal version of his short story, Cabal, which remains faithfull to the texture of the short story as well as the plot line. Craig Sheffer is at his best as a tortured young psychotic, who may also be a serial killer, but the true delight of the cast is director, David Cronenberg as Boon's psychiatrist.
If you like Clive Barker then you will appreciate Nightbreed. Barker fills his print media with descriptions of layered scent and sight that provide an otherworldly feel to everything he has written; visually he does the same in Nightbreed. Though the violence and gore abound they belong to Barker's world not ours.
All in all Nightbreed succedes as a Clive Barker vehicle and what more can you ask?
Movie Review: Clive Barker: weird, wonderful & watchable. Summary: 4 Stars
Clive Barker has created some of scariest, most freaked-out charectors in modern horror, no less so than in Nightbreed. Written as Cabel, Barker continues his exploration of the outer realms of experience. Proving once more that true monsters don't wear scales, but often a business suit or uniform and purgatory can exist in your own home.
With the Cenobites, he showed us a vision of Hell.
This time, he's given the night a hero and the Breed aren't raising Hell, they are fighting to survive it.
Though a bit dated in terms of todays CGI loaded films, Nightbreed is still a classic and worth a place on the shelf of any Horror lover. Enjoy
