Movie Reviews of NightbreedMovie Review: I want to live in Midian Summary: 4 Stars
After the success of HELLRAISER, Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED is the adaptation of his masterpiece novel CABAL. Midian, a forbidden subterranean community made up of varies lost civilizations exist peacefully without the dangers of mankind. These magical beings, shapeshifters from ancient tribes live in a world beyond death. When mankind finally penetrates their precious world the saying goes "there goes the neighborhood". With doom at their doorstep they are in search of a new leader, Boone (Craig Sheffer)a mere mortal and a "natural" to them has been chosen to find a new home. But is this natural ready for all the challenges? It's the fight for survival.
NIGHTBREED had superior make-up for its time created by Chief Make-up Artist Aileen Seaton with the assistance of UK Special Make-up Design team Bob Keen and Geoff Portass. Costume designs by Ann Hollowood and an excellent musical score by none other then Danny Elfman. But there's more, David Cronenburg plays the role of Decker, an evil, manipulative and shady psychiatrist who's out to destroy Boone and Midian itself. Love his asymetic leather button mask. He is the true meaning of human waste. Doug Bradley as Lylesberg who is best known for his role as Pinhead in the HELLRAISER series.
Movie Review: An inconsistent film with redeeming qualities... Summary: 4 Stars
"Nightbreed", based on the book "Cabal" by Clive Barker.Directing from a screenplay of his own novel, Barker's film is unfortunately inconsistent in both style and tone, and the plot meanders somewhat inconsequentially. Also lacking are the more homoerotic undertones of the novel, although a certain amount remains between Craig Scheffer's Boone and the decidedly sexually-appealing monster Peloquin (played by actor/director Oliver Parker). Boone is plagued by memories of a place he has never seen, with his visions twisted by psychotic psychologist Decker, played by David Cronenberg. Boone seeks out this place and eventually finds himself in Midian, which we discover is 'where the monsters' go. What is interesting about Barker's film is the perspective taken here; the film attempts to lay our sympathy with the creatures who are persecuted and slaughtered by the redneck police force, and does so with some success. Despite its major flaws, Nightbreed does succeed in eliciting a strong degree of emotion for the monsters, no doubt inspired by Barker's own homosexuality; while the direction is messy and the production design glaringly inconsistent throughout, the film does at least compensate for these flaws in its humanity.
Movie Review: Where The Wild Things Are... Summary: 4 Stars
After finding out just what this film went through, I'm surprised it was released at all. It appears that about half the movie was cut out by the "experts" who decide what we, the audience, will pay to see. Alas, much of the story, character develoment, and monster fx have been excised in order to squeeze NIGHTBREED into it's truncated 101 minute form. Why? Because we apparently are too stupid and easily bored to possibly make it through a longer, more complete version. At least that seems to be the reason. I liked NIGHTBREED, and found it's mythology to be both original and entertaining. Most of the monsters look cool. My favorite is the porcupine babe! I love her quills! Dr. Dekker (David Cronenberg) is chillingly calm and lethal. Charles Haid (Altered States) comes through loud and clear as a brutal hick w/ way too much authority in his cop role. In fact, there's much to admire in NIGHTBREED. I just wish I could see the uncut, non-mutilated version for myself! I'm tired of hearing about how great it could / would / should have been! I hate it when movies are shredded for purely economic reasons. Unfortunately, that's the reality. Hopefully, a restored director's cut is forthcoming...
Movie Review: Creative horror? Summary: 4 Stars
What I like about this film is that it tries hard to tell a story that's much richer than most of the horror fare, which is typically what you would get out of a novel. Most horror films aim for cheap scares and gore, and usually offer nothing of plot or character development (i.e. the Friday the 13th series); they are typically simplistic. What Nightbreed shoots for is more complicated, more involved. There are no clear heroes or villains in the film, despite outward appearances and actions, and the characters are dynamic; there are no static Killer and Victim archetypes. There is also an interesting mystique to the world of Midian, and to the monsters that dwell there. Also, what most are bothered by what isn't explained in the film, is a point that I find attractive. I enjoy the idea that there is so much more to the story, that it sparks one's own imagination. These are also probably the film's greatest flaws as well, as it tries to be progressive and just doesn't have the time in the film to fully develop the story as it did in the novel. The end product feels rushed and under budget. In the end what it lacks in pacing and polish, it makes up in spades with creativity and scope.
Movie Review: " Where the Monsters Roam" Summary: 4 Stars
Night BreedNight Breed is an imaginative movie from the bizarre mind of Clive Barker. The very depth and originality of this movie will blow your mind. The twisted story takes place in a land where the monsters roam. Midian. It is about a man who is murdered and goes to Midian and then word slipped about Midian and people are coming to destroy it. So he has to save it. The twisted plot evolves horror with love and revenge. Imaginative creatures come and go leaving you thinking hard about this film. This movie has many different things in it like romance, horror, and of course fantasy. Night Breed express's many emotions and showing not all monsters are bad. The constant feeling of stress is brought to you through the strong acting. The gore and effects are great and make you enjoy the movie even more. The acting is superb with great performances by Craig Sheffer as Aaron Boone. Many people dislike this movie but I enjoyed it overall there are a few flaws (Confusing Moments) but I look past that and give this move an 8/10 Score: 8/10 By: Snuggle Suggestion: Fantasy and horror fans unite and check this one out.
