Movie Reviews of Nightbreed

Movie Review: Should this remain ... "BELOW" ?
Summary: 5 Stars

Having worked on this movie as a member of the Image Animation make-up FX crew back in the late 80's I recently revisited this little fella to see if it was as I remember it. It seems you either love it or loath it and have read some conflicting opinions in these reviews ... it's true there was a HUGE amount cut from this movie, most notably and very sadly pretty much all of the stop motion animation sequences which had they been kept it would've stepped this up from it's 'men in masks' reputation - also a lot of the main characters originally slated for the chop at the end were kept back for a potential sequel that never came ... the inclusion of the 'wall' painted by the superb artist Raplh McQuarrie gave the movie some resonance but at the end of the day too many chef's spoiled the broth and good ideas were crudely cut and poorly edited to compact this into a shorter running time. That said this movie has a place in my heart, in an age that was just coming to terms with CG a la Jim Camerons "The Abyss", "Nightbreed" didn't pull any punches and the campy cult status it seems to have earnt by a loving following of hardcore fans is pleasing. For the record, there were a lot of monsters and scenes shot that were never seen and fans would feast on the deleted scenes from what was removed or changed - Eigerman and Ashberry's demise, stop mo' creatures such as giant flying insects, a troll with a mouth for a groin tearing a car apart, a deformed tiger woman riding a huge dinosaur beast through the tunnels of midian and a scorpian woman were all made and never used ... I had heard a sequel was penned that would've had a re-constructed Baphomet WWF'ing it out with the 'old gods' in central park which if done now would be spectacular but times and tastes change, I can only hope that Clive will re-visit this baby at some point and do it justice in the future - my advice, go buy and enjoy ... if only to be taken away for a couple of hours to Midian - the place where the monsters go ...

Movie Review: One of the most underrated horror movies ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) has been having bizarre nightmares about monsters and there has been some horrific murders going on, his psychiatrist Dr. Deckar (David Cronenberg) believes he's going nuts until he is set up to be murdered. Boone's body is whisked away by a secret cult of outcast creatures called the Nightbreed and becomes one of them, however Deckar and some other humans have discovered their realm as a war between man and beast clashes for a true battle of who is the real monster.

Writer-Director Cliver Barker creates another outstanding masterpiece of the macabre combining ghastly horror with gothic fantasy all combined in one. The music score by Danny Elfman is quite outstanding especially the brilliant creature and make-up effects used in this motion picture which made it the best special effects film of the year 1990. After two years in the making, Mr. Barker delivered a very underrated cult classic of art with a moral about that sometimes humankind is the monster while the creatures are just misunderstood beings. The film is quite gory at times but some of them got cut out to avoid "X" rating back in 1990 as hopefully sometime Mr. Barker can release an unrated extended director's cut on DVD or Blu-Ray but for now, i recommend this fun and spiritual horror flick to fans of the genre.

This DVD contains a nice transfer with good sound with the only two extras being the trailer and bios.

Movie Review: Clive Barker in top form, Nightbreed is a true ten!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a true ten of a horror film!original and highly interesting, Nightbreed brings the best qualities about Clive Barker's unique visions and ideas. The story follows the saga of Aaron Boone, a guy who is hunted down by a maniac doctor (played by horror legend David Cronenberg) and finds protection within the guarded walls of a cemitery in the middle of Alberta's beautiful and cold wilderness called Midian, inhabitated by hideous creatures. But the monsters turn out to be the good guys against a beast called Human Nature, in this film based on a short story.
Terrific performances by Cronenberg as a cold, menacing and elegant doctor who turns out to be a psycho, Anne Hobby as the main guy's love interest and a supporting cast that pays hommage to horror legends Doug Bradley (Pinhead in Hellraiser, and here he plays some kind of older father figure to the creatures of Midian) and Simon Banford (Butterball in Hellraiser, here as member of the Nightbreed). Howard Shore's score is a joy to listen, very creepy indeed!the scene in which Boone is first confrontated by the Midian breed is memorable mainly due to Shore's score.
Overall, I highly recommend Nightbreed, and it should be acquired by anyone who trully loves horror films!

Movie Review: Interesting! Bizarre?
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie isn't bad! It's not bad at all! In fact, I'd even hazard my reputation by saying it's...good?

Firstly, I've seen the first two hellraiser movies. I've also played some Clive Barker video games and read some of his fiction. Honestly, I've never really been that impressed by his work...until I saw Nightbreed fifteen minutes ago. I won't go into the story, since others here have given absurdly comprehensive details, but here are my thoughts:

A great cast (with great performances from all, including David Cronenburg), a wonderful score by Danny Elfman, incredible special effects, and a story that just blew my socks off, you really can't miss with Nightbreed. Not to mention the deep delicious, between-the-lines commentary on religion, racism, and humanity in general. This movie thrilled me, scared me, and made me think, too...now THAT'S what I call a good horror flick!

Especially considering the price, you should pick this up! For those leery of Clive Barker stuff, give it a shot. It's definitely the best work from him I've ever observed!

Besides, once you see Nightbreed you'll know where the monsters live...

Movie Review: Stunning strange amazing horror fantasy film!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a really great horror fantasy film directed and written by Clive Barker after having wrote and directed the hugely successful Hellraiser a couple of years before. This is a really amazing film, bsting the genre open, as it is not exactly strictly horror but not real fantasy either. It is like a dark gory fairy tale, well better than that sounds. It it huge, fast paced, well acted, amazing special effects before CGI came along. Truly memorable bizarre monsters with real depth and different sides to the whole story.
It was tragically badly promoted and distributed on release but they just did not know how to sell it. Now though it could be very huge on DVD. This actually though, as great as it is, is not the final cut of the film. The director Clive Barker does intend to eventually regain the missing or lost scenes from the film studios and recut them into the film as they were originally intended. If you see this fantasic fresh dark fantasy film, you should join the fans in pushing for a much deserved proper director's cut of the whole film as intended with bonus features and commentaries for this special highly unique oringinal horror film.
