Movie Review: Fantastic!
Summary: 5 Stars
This is really an outstanding film, and I would recommend this to anyone who has not yet seen it. Set in Germany before the Wall came down, it is about a couple families who want to escape the communism in the East and come up with a daring plan to do so.
Since this is A)Disney and B)a true story, one would assume the outcome is a happy ending, right? Not so fast! I dare you to sit still through this movie and peacefully await the ending. It is truly a thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat!
When I watch movies like this (going against the communist machine, etc), emotions run high--at least with the good ones. This movie does not disappoint on the emotions or the thrills.
As for the acting, one of the wives was less than stellar, but she was the only weak spot. Don't let that stop you from a great family film!
Movie Review: A Cold War classic from Disney!

This is the true story of one of the greatest escapes of the 20th century! The year is 1979. The Strelzyk and Wetzel families desperately want to leave Communist-controlled East Germany so they decide to build a huge hot-air balloon to carry them over to West Germany. Not only is it risky relying on a balloon to carry two families, they also have to avoid East German police. This is a well-crafted Disney film that the whole family will enjoy. The cast includes John Hurt, Jane Alexander, and a then-unknown Beau Bridges. Although I'm very happy to own this on dvd, this is a bare-bones dvd as far as special features go. At least the sound quality is better than my old vhs copy. Still, this is a very important and inspiring story that everyone should know about and I highly recommend this movie to people of all ages.Movie Review: Flight for Freedom story highly recommended

Its hard not to be captivated by this enthralling true story of two family's desperate attempt to escape from east germany. The pacing is perfect, the finale will have you holding your breath. Jerry Goldsmiths score superb. Both John Hurt and Jane Alexander are brilliant. If you are a disney fan and were around in the early 80's and you never caught this film then now is your chance. Released in 1982, a very different film by the disney studios this is a truly remarkable picture. The studio experimented during this period with movies that would broaden the studio's horizon a little. TEX and Tron were released the same year. Night Crossing somehow didnt garner that much attention at the time, although it was favorably reviewed. Thankyou buena vista for taking it of the shelf, this is a perfect family film.Movie Review: A true story that never grows old

This movie ranks as one of my top favorites. It is so well done, that though I have seen it many times, the suspense still keeps me on the edge of my seat every time I view it. I watch it on a regular basis, each time inviting a family or friend who has never seen it to join me. It's a marvelous supplement to a homeschool history program. The movie provides a real sense of what living behind the iron curtain was like, and shows the high value of the quest for freedom.Movie Review: Thrilling account of victory in the name of freedom.

Having been born in 1941, I have always had a deep facination with the stories from the war. This if a true story and, although set in more recent times, harkens back to, and and the aftermath of, those days. I remember the wall going up and was blessed to witness it coming down. A story of the thirst for freedom that so many Americans take for granted. Thanks amazon.com for making so many of these true stories available to those of us who don't want to forget.
