Movie Reviews of Nietzsche and the Nazis

Movie Review: pleasantly surprised!
Summary: 5 Stars

In the course of these reviews, much has been said, and from them, one can already get a good feel of the presentation and of the case presented.

The single, one star review comes from someone who admits to having not viewed the film, but also states that he has no idea of who Stephen Hicks is. To those who think that the above stated criteria are such that one should be able to derive any valid criticism from, are sorely mistaken.

For those who may be interested to know, Stephen Hicks holds a PhD and is a professor of Philosophy at Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois.

For the sake of not sounding repetitive and recounting the various topics covered in this video as other reviewers have already done in detail, I will instead say several things that may aid a person wondering if this DVD is worth buying.

This documentary is not done in the more modern documentary style so typical of this modern internet age where you are bombarded by a million different images to keep your attention. It consists largely of differing place settings and perspectives of Dr. Hicks speaking. He is engaging, lucid, and very easy to listen to. This is not to say that there are no images or artwork present in the film, there are a lot, just far fewer in comparison than other contemporary documentaries that are of the more mainstream variety often found on TV.

The length of this film is 2 hours and 45 minutes, so this isn't a mild 45 minute documentary that attempts to bite off more than it can chew, when he touches on a topic, it's more than a superficial glance, which one might be tempted into doing for the sake of breadth.

For those, who may, like myself, want a documentary to be as packed full of facts, and information as possible, you will not be disappointed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the full title of this video is Nietzsche and the Nazis: A personal view by Stephen Hicks, Ph.D. It is a personal view, but it is one built upon a thorough examination and fair treatment to the evidence for someone coming to such a conclusion.

Another reviewer Luke Hennessy said:

"But his conclusion is almost childishly simplistic and (if you ask me) thoroughly anti-Nietzschean. After his comparative analysis, he immediately returns to a sort of unquestioning, modern, moralistic, liberal-democratic mind set, denouncing everything that the Nazis stood for, philosophically and practically, which he summarises in 5 simplistic dot-points (e.g. socialism, collectivism, nationalism, etc). He then proceedes to outline what he thinks are the binary opposite values of what the Nazis stood for, such as capitalism, democracy, liberalism, etc, concluding by suggesting that if we want to avoid the rise of another National-Socialist regime in the future, we need to adopt the latter set of principles! He doesn't in any way indicate what Nietzsche might have thought of this proposal, or how the two "opposite" sets of principles might interact, or potentially be synthesised - quite bizarre for someone who has spent as much time as Hicks studying the anti-binary ideas of Nietzsche and post-Nietzschean philosophy."

In my opinion, to propose what Nietzsche would have thought of this proposal would be nothing more than conjecture in an attempt to put words in the mouth of a man who has long since been dead. I think that you said it best with the following

"He also provides an in depth overview of Nietzsche's philosophy, and a solid analytical discussion of the parallels and differences between the two philosophies. In short, he provides 5 reasons to suggest that major parallels existed (e.g. Nietzsche's support of war as means of cultivating "greatness") and 5 major points of difference (e.g. Nietzsche's disdain towards German anti-semitism and German nationalism)."

I think that this analytical discussion is the closest one can come in any attempt to try to understand what Nietzsche may have thought of what this documentary proposes, and it is left for the viewer to decide from the earlier analysis what they think he might have thought about this.

The latter statement calls the conclusion child like in simplicity, and there's some truth to this, because it would be more satisfying to the viewer if it was a little more detailed and expounded upon, but do not make the mistake in assuming that this means the conclusion is an invalid one.

To say this is, is to say that the main principles of Nazism can exist when the polar opposite of a main Nazi ideal is in practice which is not true. I'm not saying that Luke in his review is saying this, just pointing out, to say the conclusion drawn is invalid, is to say this.

I could, but will not go into detail on this for the sake of the viewer being able to watch it for themselves and decide.
