Movie Reviews of Nicholas Nickleby (Special Edition)

Movie Review: A Fun Movie That Includes Some High Drama - Charles Dickens With A Touch of Hollywood.
Summary: 5 Stars

The story was presented well and the actors were excellent cast in this version. I believe it was as true to the novel as reasonably possible, with a touch of Hollywood to make it more fun to watch.

The 'good' characters were full of goodness and light. They were lovable.

The 'bad' characters were disgustingly bad. There was nothing positive to be said of them.

After watching this, I'm convinced that it covered the novel amazingly well in spite of the length of the movie. I kept wanting one of the bad characters to be redeemed, but no such luck. I knew that already, but that's the theme of this movie, HOPE.

If you want a study of good vs. evil with a little comedy thrown in, this is worth watching, and it's a Charles Dickens classic too! You can't beat that.

Movie Review: This is my favorite adaptation of a Dicken's Story
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a rich film filled with all the usual Dickens flourishes including and most significant, loss and redemption. But what sets this film apart is the supremely excellent job that the casting director did to assemble the most perfect collection of actors. Every major and supporting role is filled with marvelous people who bring a wonderful richness to the production. Every scene is compelling and interesting. If you haven't seen it. You should rent this film immediately. But my true recommendation is to buy it. I have watched it around every three years or so and expect that I will continue to do so into perpetuity. You will love it. You have my word.

Nicholas Nickleby

Movie Review: Don't Wait Another Minute to See This Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Some will tell you that this version is too rushed or that the characterizations are not given enough time to develop or seem forced. I say this is one of the most perfect adaptations of a Dicken's novel. The essential story elements are there and are fully fleshed out to give you the story without wasting your time. The cast has been perfectly selected from the strongly emoting Charly Hunnam to the brief and spirited performances of Alan Cummings and Barry Humphreys. This movie will transport you back to the time of Dickens and will do it delightfully. You will be glad you bought it for yourself, you will share it with your friends and best of all... you will be warmed in heart on a cold afternoon when you sit down and watch it over a cup of tea. Enjoy!!!

Movie Review: Outstanding screen adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

Screenplay adaptations are just that-adaptations! Some are perfectly awful. That is not the case here. After successfully adapting Jane Austen's EMMA, Doug McGrath, once again, shows why he is such a leader at capturing the essence of a labourious novel and distilling it for viewing in the cinema.Again, McGrath signs on the talents of Rachel Portman as his soundtrack composer to capture the varying moods of this most delightful Dickens classic.WHAT A CAST,TOO!!!-Tony award and Academy award actors, theatre and cinema sensibities, comedians and dramatic thespians, veteran personalities and fresh young faces meet together in this positively charming, expertly directed NICKLEBY.You will watch this again and again and again.THE DVD COMMENTARIES ARE EXCEPTIONAL!

Movie Review: Wonderful
Summary: 5 Stars

I haven't read the book, but watching the movie and enjoying the characters has definitely put Nicholas Nickleby up there on my "to-read" list! The acting was great; there was a good balance of comedy and drama. It's just a good story all around. Visually, I really enjoyed the film's look, especially the colors and cinematography. The dialogue did get rather soft in some scenes--in fact, I had to flip on the subtitles a few times, but I was so involved in the story that I didn't mind doing that to find out what was going to happen next. This is just a good good story, without a lot of the trash that completely permeates today's movies and books.
