Movie Reviews of Nicholas Nickleby (Special Edition)Movie Review: Nicholas Mickleby Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent movie for all ages with all the elements; romance, comedy (a bit quirky at times), adventure, values, drama and tragedy (though the tragedy does not overwhelm the film or ruin the enjoyment of the story) and the cinematography is exceptional. I had seen this movie years ago and encouraged my family to watch it recently with me. They loved it and we have all added it to our top films list. It's rare to find a film with such heart and the dynamics of human nature, especially without being completely depressing. It's good to see a character with such high ethics and such good values, come out on top in the end. I get sooo tired of seeing movies that if someone is good, that the only point that can be made, is that something horrible happens and they end up losing in the end. But not in this one! Wonderful, diverse characters in a wonderful and diverse setting; from the slums to beautiful, lush country side. Watch this movie and make sure to share it with family and friends.
Movie Review: A liltlingly evocative view of Dickens' Olde England Summary: 5 Stars
NICHOLAS NICKLEBY is a genuine delight, a brilliant transcription of the lengthy novel by Charles Dickens into a near flawless film by crafty, witty, sensitive Douglas McGrath. Capturing the color (literally) and the flavors of Dickens' not so merry olde England, this fast paced frolic of a film concentrates on maintaining our interest in the myriad characters, explains every twist and turn of the convoluted plot, and is graced by a dream cast of superb actors: Charlie Hunnam, Jamie Bell, Tom Courtenay, Christopher Plummer, Nathan Lane, Alan Cumming, Juliet Stevenson, Jim Broadbent, newcomers Anne Hathaway and Romola Garai, and even "Dame Edna Everidge". They all interact with total conviction from the most morose parts to the festivals of glee. The score by Rachel Portman enhances the film well. This is simply one of the best filmed versions of a Dickens story yet made - 'or ever likely to be'. Highly Recommended!
Movie Review: Have your hanky handy Summary: 5 Stars
I read the book when I was around thirteen. I've seen at least one other film version, however this one is the best. Perhaps because I'm an adult now, and the story affected me more. It has a universal theme of misfortune met with strength and resilience. Nobility. I think we all can relate to the human spirit being challenged, and our hero choosing the high road. A morality play, if you will. An evil uncle who can choose to aid his dead brother's family, but instead chooses to see if he can degrade them into turning into as despicable a character as he is. You truly feel emotions watching this film, and you root for Nicholas, his family, and his friend Smike. If you need a good cry, and who doesn't at some time or another, watch this film. On the flip side, Nathan Lane had me cracking up! Great screenwriter whose words were beautifully realized by a sparkling cast.
Movie Review: Thumbs up to Dickens and McGrath Summary: 5 Stars
Nicholas Nickleby is a classic: the story of friendship, hardship, and the struggle to live independantly in 19th century England. Douglas McGrath beautifully brings Dickens' masterpeice to life. The Story: We find the title character (Charlie Hunnam) a recently fatherless teen who takes his mother and sister to their estranged uncle (Christopher Plummer) seeking financial aid. Little does the family know that all Ralph Nickleby has to give is hate and lies. The odious uncle sends Nicholas to Dotheboys Hall, a "school" for unwanted boys, where he encounters the cruel Squeerses (Jim Broadbent, Juliet Stevenson) and the abused Smike (Jamie Bell), with whom he escapes and sets out on his adventure to rescue and reclaim his family. The Thoughts: With a star studded cast and excellent score, Nicholas Nickleby is poignant and comedic. A definite must-see.
Movie Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I was surprised at how well done this movie was, considering most adaptations of Charles Dickon's classics are botched. This one however was incredibly written as well as acted. It had very talented actors as well as a smoothly flowing plot.
Never having read the book myself I found the plot most intriguing, and though I was a little worried about the length of the movie (as I have the shortest attention span in the world) I was soon engaged in the plot. I did not feel compelled to skip portions or speed through others as with the help of a capable DVD player I sometimes do.
Once again I cannot stress how wonderful this film is. I highly reccomend it. One note of advice that I give is that I suggest the use of subtitles. Some people find them distracting, but if you don't they sometimes aid with the dialogue. Enjoy!!!
