Movie Reviews of Nicholas Nickleby (Special Edition)

Movie Review: Good Against Evil!
Summary: 5 Stars

In this wonderful tale we meet Nicholas who becomes the head of his household after his father's untimely death. Taken back with no money they go to their Uncle Ralph, a wealthy man, for help. Unfortunately he is a terrible greedy person who is only interested in his own gains in life. We travel with this family as Uncle places each one of them in terrible situations under the guise of helping them.
Nicholas is placed as a school teacher in a terrible establishment run by the Squeers. A horrible, cruel couple that treat the young boys there worse than animals. It is here that Nicholas befriends Smike, a crippled boy whose heart is of gold.
Escaping they travel back and are reunited with Nicholas mother and sister. As fate steps in Nicholas is able to bring his family together and they learn the true evil that their Uncle was doing to them.
This is a wonderful tale, one of good versus evil. A film that shows the blackness in some men's hearts and the purity in others. Although there is some sadness the ending warms your heart as good triumpts through Nicholas crushing the evil chains and lies that thrived for so long. The ending was shocking; I would have never guessed it. Outstanding surprise.
I truly enjoyed this movie, the message of goodness winning over evil was rung loud and clear. I recommend it to all.

Movie Review: Excellent version of Nicholas Nickleby!
Summary: 5 Stars

I read this novel several years ago, and was thrilled when I saw the Bravo version. However, I noticed some scenes were rather different and offending, and, as another reviewer noted, "sexed up". When this version came out, I was hesitant. I had read the novel once more, and knew Bravo had made some changes. I had my doubts about this one. Thank goodness for everyone's reviews! I bought the DVD and loved it! This is pure Dickens to the bone. Wonderfully cast, acted and portrayed, this moving story, with some incredibly unforgetable scenes, must have been pure magic on the big screen. The DVD is excellent and very lush. You feel straight out of Victorian England and rapidly absorbed into the story. I highly suggest watching both versions, and comparing them to the book. Afterall, I have 3 versions of A Christmas Carol, 3 of Jane Eyre, 2 of Little Women, etc.! Only one thing bothered me-Anne Hathaway. Her teeth are too bleached, her wedding dress too modern, her eyes too penciled, and her hair parted on the side (Victorians were big on symetry and a woman would never have parted her hair on the side). She did not look at all Victorian, but rather like someone on the cover of Bride Magazine. Sorry, but it just didn't cut it. The rest was fantastic. Enjoy both movie and book!

Movie Review: Nicholas Nickleby is a Beautiful Film!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was not aware that a movie had been made based on the book as I happened by it on a shelf in the video store. I'm typically drawn to movies based on classic literature. Though I've yet to read the book (so I don't know if the movie strays), I hoped the movie would be worth watching.

Nicholas Nickleby is a beautiful film. The acting is wonderfully done. Especially by Charlie Hunnam (?), Christopher Plummer, and Jamie Bell. Alan Cumming and Nathan Lane are delightful. I loved every minute they were on the screen. The young lady who plays Nicholas' sister is lovely to look at, gentle of spirit, and her face radiates innocence. Anne Hathaway (sp?) does a fine job portraying the sweet Madeline.

The story (which has already been summarized quite well) is very touching. If I'm moved to outward response, it has to be good. I found myself cheering on a couple occasions. Especially the scene in Dotheboys when Nicholas comes to Smike's aid.

The country scenery is lovely and beautifully filmed. I would've loved to have seen more of it.

You will find yourself embracing those who are good and waiting anxiously for the demise of those who are evil. Nicholas Nickleby will move you, inspire you and warm your heart.

Movie Review: Well-done!
Summary: 5 Stars

Having seen both the Channel 4 version and this one, I must say this is the better. The British Channel 4 produced a longer (by one hour) rendition of the novel a year or two before this one, but that version suffers from several weaknesses: Nicholas looks too weak, the whole atmosphere is too dark and gloomy, Kate looks bitchy, Smike seems a tad too old, the set is unattractively realistic, etc. This American production has none of these faults. In fact, the biggest problem with the British version is that it is way too heavy on the dark side, when Dickens's book is intended to be balanced between tragedy and comedy. This movie strikes this balance very well without losing the pathos. The quality of the DVD is also good.

For time's sake the director omits the Mantalinis altogether (the British version has that all right), perhaps thinking that this is marginal to the main story itself. It would have been great if the film had dealt with the question of why exactly Ralph Nickleby never gave a moment's thought that Smike might have been his own son. This is not explicitly answered in the book either, even though the reason may seem obvious to some.

Movie Review: Wonderful adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know how they did it.
Before I watched this movie, immediately after reading the book, I was dreading that it would leave out major parts of the plot, absolutely massacring the story. I honestly didn't think they'd be able to squeeze it all in. But they pulled it off. I don't think I have ever seen a better adaptation, of ANY book. Even with all the changes of setting, I never once felt like I was watching separate, chopped-up episodes or was being rushed through anything.
It is extremely unfortunate that this movie did not get more recognition. I had never even heard of it until I read the book.
I couldn't figure out why "Chicago" won best picture at the Oscars when it was up against movies like "Gangs of New York". After seeing a great movie like "Nicholas Nickleby" I can't even imagine why it was nominated. The injustice of it is depressing.
And how about Jamie Bell as Smike? I thought that was a very praise-worthy performance. He made me cry like a baby.
