Movie Reviews of Nicholas Nickleby (Special Edition)Movie Review: Endearing and heartfelt adaption for all ages! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this DVD hoping maybe this adaption could be a nice departure from the cinematic crap(aka Scooby Doo movies and others that center around fart jokes) my kids(8 and 5) usually crave. They were leery with the "old looking" dress of the characters on the cover, but were hooked and engaged from minute one of the story. It begins by asking the viewer about what would you do if you weren't under the protection of your parents basically-that totally hooked my kids. Next came some of very scary adventures at the nasty boys school which totally horrified my children, the deep friendship between Smike and Nicholas that ended up making my 8 year old cry towards the end, and a satisfying ending that made them understand that even when the world is a cruel and heartless place, you can still make your way with dignity and charity, and form relationships and "families" with the good people who inevitably meet up with you along the way. My children were genuinely touched-we actually did some research on the fact that many NOrthern England schools were ghastly in their treatment of the children in the care, and that Squeers was actually modeled after a real man! This movie was a great starting point for my children to think about life in a philosophical context, and to wonder about life for others in different places and times. And heck, it made them a little more aware that they have it pretty good and that whining about not having the newest game system seems pretty lame in comparison to the true trials other children endured before them and even sadly, presently in many areas of the world today. Beautiful and heartfelt adaption that is choice for children who can handle some of the more abusive parts of the story....
Movie Review: Really enjoyable! Summary: 5 Stars
I usually like all adaptations of classics, because the film always starts with a great story. Some are done better than others and director Doug McGrath did a really good job with this one. I haven't read the novel so I can't compare the film to the book but the film felt complete in itself--I didn't sense that anything essential to the story was missing.
Everything about this is well done- the script, the settings, costumes, music, all of it. The cast is superb--a really fine group of established, talented actors and it's a pleasure to watch them. Some reviewers here didn't like the lead actor, Charlie Hunnan, but I thought he was perfect for the role--young, innocent (the director said he was looking for someone "lamblike") and certainly handsome. I quickly became engaged in the character, Nicholas, due to the qualities of this young man--his charm and earnestness. Tall, blond, with great cheekbones, he is the essence of a romantic hero, at least in my book.
The crippled orphan, Slake, is brilliantly played by Jamie Bell. It's a hard part, I think and the temptation to overdo the pathos is great. He did it just right and won the hearts of most all viewers, as you can read here. I felt that Anne Hathaway was the weakest link but she's not bad and fortunately, she's only in the last part.
Having seen quite a few hyper-arty films lately that seem to eschew any real action, emotion or....God forbid....an ending that offers real emotional resolution, I found this to be a wonderful relief. Goodbye artiness, bring back art!
Movie Review: A great heart felt movie!!!! Best in years Summary: 5 Stars
I am a true Dickens fan and always will be, however I normally disike books that are made into movies.I was totally shocked to find what a great movie this was and I would recommand this to anyone who likes English movies or Dickens.
I loved Jaime Bell as Smike he really stole the lead from Charles Hunnam. Every scene he was in was the soo good. I felt like reaching out to put my arms around the poor boy and comfort him. I almost never cry in a movie but I did with this one. Christoper Plummer was wonderful in this movie too, he played the evil uncle very well. It wasn't over done but no where near too soft,it's interesting how just at the end you feel a little sorry for him because of the horrible life he's lead.
I loved Nicholas's sister she was the very perfect picture of the woman Dickens loved and respected, her sweet face and diginty were beautiful. I also loved the acting of the Squeers even though their were sooo evil, they played their parts so well. When Nicholas was beating Mr.Squeers my 21 year old brother was like "yeah go go go". I was so afraid he was just going to stand here doing nothing to save Smike. Thankfully I was wrong.
Anne Hathaway was good but only good because her acent was almost none existent sometimes. I loved all of Noggs lines and his hand rubbing was right in line with the book. Alan Cummings was great with his Highland Fling as was Nathan Lane. I will watch this movie many times amd always love it. If you like or love Dickens, English or just plain good acting this movie is one of the best. Right up there with the Winslow Boy.
Movie Review: Fantastic Movie/ Much anticipated DVD Summary: 5 Stars
In anticipation of the DVD release of Nicholas Nickleby on 7/22/03 I wanted to write a review of the movie:Most people, like myself, know Dickens from his beloved "A Christmas Carol". Prior to seeing this movie I knew nothing of the story. From the previews in the theater it looked interesting. The film more than lived up to my expectations. I was blown away by this movie (especially the surprise ending which had me in tears). Beautifully crafted, Nicholas Nickleby has everything going for it. A great story, perfect casting, colorful cinematography, and a beautiful soundtrack. Briefly, the story involves the fate of Nicholas after the death of his father. He is forced by his cruel uncle to leave his sister and mother to attend a terrible boarding school, which is more like a prison. Talk about child abuse! He manages to escape with Spike, a sickly attendee who almost gets beaten to a pulp prior to their escape. As the story unfolds a strong friendship forms between Nicholas and Spike which portrays human dignity at it's highest level. I'll say no more in fear that I may give away too much of the story. The strong cast includes Christopher Plummer, Jim Broadbent and even a cameo by Nathan Lane. The DVD should be outstanding, I can hardly wait. Sadly, this amazing movie wasn't in the theaters for a long time. Great films rarely appeal to the general movie going public, which is a crime. This is a story that I feel all age groups can appreciate. It stayed with me for days... I can't say enough good things about Nicholas Nickleby. Buy the DVD, you won't regret it.
Movie Review: A Triumph Summary: 5 Stars
Everyone needs a lift every now and then: something to remind them that there is still some goodness, purity, and nobility in this fallen world. Last night I got just that, and I received it in the form of Nicholas Nickleby. That gift came wrapped in splendid acting, a brilliant cast, glowing lines, and an unparalleled plot. I cannot lavish any more honors on Nicholas Nickleby than my fellow reviewers have not already lauded, so I will simply say this: it is a triumph. This summer a lecturer asked his audience, "Is it ever wrong for [someone] to NOT watch a movie?" He recounted going to watch The Winslow Boy (another film of this genre, and just as brilliant) and found himself and his wife two of perhaps five people in the entire theater. Meanwhile, other theatergoers flocked to the shallow glitz of The Matrix. He realized he was watching one of the finest films of the late 20th century fall by the wayside. The same happened to Nicholas Nickleby. I regret to inform you that I only learned of it this summer. It should not be so. Well-informed, high-moraled movie watchers must realize that they vote with their dollars. If we want to see Hollywood turn out anything good, we've got to show our taste for it when we see it. We've missed our best chance with Nicholas Nickleby, but don't let that continue. If you are looking for a wholesome home/family/couple/group/teen/everybody movie, you will hit home with Nicholas Nickleby.
