Movie Reviews of Niagara

Movie Review: Off The Deep End!
Summary: 5 Stars

Niagara is a steamy, suspenseful movie. Marilyn Monroe as Rose, the sultry wife, heats up the screen while Joseph Cotton, as her troubled husband, George Loomis, cools it to the point of freezing. You can feel the tension build between them. Tension as powerful, in its own way, as the Falls themselves. Love and hate, steamy sexuality and cold indifference, calculated scheming and unexpected events all lead to madness and murder.
The cabin is small, the night hot and humid, the mysterious couple with their silence speaking volumes draws the focus of Polly Cutler, played by Jean Peters. Polly and her husband Bud are staying next door to the Loomis cabin. Polly senses a mystery and is troubled. She befriends George when he injures his hand. Bud, on the other hand, is oblivious to the smoldering tension so obvious to his wife Polly.
Each wife the polar opposite of her husband and both women completely opposite of each other!
With undercurrents running as deep as those beneath Niagara Falls, suspense swirls to the very end. ~ Mrs. B.

Movie Review: Lots To Look At And Admire
Summary: 5 Stars

The great scenery and colors of Niagara Falls, two very attractive female leads, and an interesting story all add up to a very good rating for this classic film.

The DVD offers a very nice print: sharp, with color restoration that makes it look great. Niagara Falls never looked better (and I live just 25 miles away), and either did Marilyn Monroe or Jean Peters.

Everyone knows about Monroe's beauty (and, I think, underrated acting talents) but Peters was a beautiful woman with a great body, herself. It's the men in here who are goofy: Joseph Cotten and his whining and mental illness; Casey Adams with his nerd-ish personality and Adams' boss Don Wilson, who is even more of a cornball.

This crime story is a suspenseful film with several twists and turns and segments that keep you on the edge of your seat. It's film noir material even though it's color which might disqualify it for some purists.

Movie Review: Add This One to Your Movie Library!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has so many twists and turns, just when you expect the movie to go one way, it shifts totally into the opposite. Excellent screen writing for this film. I've become bored w/ recent movies, so I've decided to start looking @ classic movies for entertainment. This is definitely something that you would want to add to your movie library. Keeps you in suspense the whole time. Other than the "Seven Year Itch," I have never seen Marilyn Monroe in film. From my point of view, she does an excellent job in this film. Not your ordinary "dumb blonde" role. This movie was totally not what I expected, especially for a movie done in the '50s. Views of Niagara Falls were beautiful. Go get this movie!

Movie Review: Released in 1953, it's still good to watch again!
Summary: 5 Stars

Marilyn Monroe and Joseph Cotten star in this dark story about love and murder set at Niagara Falls. Though not the best film ever made, Niagara helped cement Monroe's status as a box office draw. It afforded her the chance to play a cold-blooded and conniving role. Joseph Cotten turns in another of his intense, dark and disturbed portrayals.

There is an interesting noir feeling to this Technicolor film with the stalking sequence in the clock tower and the finale. The film makes great use of the falls themselves, both in a "travelogue" sense and in terms of using the location to create and maintain atmosphere. Released in 1953, it's still good to watch again!

Movie Review: Joseph Cotten is the star here !
Summary: 5 Stars

When one thinks of the 1953 movie Niagra, most think of Marylin Monroe bouncing around in bright sexy outfits and actually doing a decent job at acting, which is a rarity !
Monroe aside, this movie is definitely a Joseph Cotten vehicle and may be his finest acting job from a long career.
The radiant and beautiful Jean Peters adds a bit of small town feel even with the powerful Niagra Falls in many scenes.
This is an excellent movie and keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very end !
