Movie Reviews of Ned KellyMovie Review: Great Movie Summary: 4 Stars
In 1880, on 11 of November, NED KELLY was hanged at Melbourne jail. 126 years ago!!! So I decided to watch the movie once again. This one is one of my favourites.
Movie Review: A disappointment Summary: 3 Stars
I was expecting a lot more from this film. I thought it was going to be like "Rob Roy", the excellent Liam Neeson film from 1995 which also was a story of injustice done to an innocent person. Unfortunately, this director kept everything so distant that I could never really engage with the characters; couldn't feel invested in what's going to happen to them. I felt more involved in the special features section, which had a short documentary on the real Ned Kelly--this short documentary made me feel for the characters, the way the big film should have! Most of the supporting actors are very good, but Naomi Watts, in her pre-Hollywood phase, is really just window dressing here.
Still, the movie has some charms. I love the Australian scenery. The soundtrack is good. And for once, I don't want to roll my eyes with disgust at one of Orlando Bloom's performances. Finally, he has a manly role to play; not some lightweight pretty-boy. And Heath Ledger is a good actor, who could be a great actor, but he just hasn't been given the right role (as of the date of this review). if only someone would give this man a meaty part, his career would just take off. He's the best thing in this movie, but it's not HIS movie, the way "Rob Roy" was Liam Neeson's. I realize that this story was different and that "Rob Roy" was able to get revenge on his tormentors in a way that Ned Kelly couldn't. Still, I expected to feel something more for this character that this film didn't provide. Ned Kelly's story was told, and some of the emotional elements were there, but its heart was lacking.
Movie Review: Not great, but not horrible either Summary: 3 Stars
I was a little disappointed with this film, but I don't think it can really be blamed on the actors. I love watching movies based on real life people though I know movie makers often take enormous liberties when it comes to what version of the "truth" they want to portray on the screen. This movie didn't seem all that interested in telling the story of the Kelly gang. It seemed more interested in showing us just another western. You never get a really good picture of any of the characters so it's hard to feel really attached to anyone. When the predictable end comes, it's hard to make yourself care.
The redeeming qualities for me were the following: First, they do not portray Ned Kelly as a hero or as being perfect. He is shown with his flaws and because of that, we can relate to him better as a human being who has simply been put into horrible circumstances. Second, Geoffrey Rush is a fabulous actor. He makes the best of the poorly written part of Francis Hare, the man sent to track down the Kelly gang. Third, Orlando Bloom. I'm not a big Orlando Bloom fan, but he is the only one who manages to sparkle in this bland film. His character is funny, frisky (to say the least), and probably more human than all the other characters combined. He, like Rush, definitely makes the best of a poorly written/directed script...and in the end, his character is probably the only one you will really remember.
Movie Review: As usual...... Summary: 3 Stars
Heath Ledger gives a performance that is so real, so genuine and so meaningful, that you actually think you are watching the real Ned Kelly, even if you knew nothing about him before seeing this movie. Another reminder of losing one of the most incredible actors of this lifetime, all too soon. The film itself is interesting, and almost unimagineable at times. At times, the story is told in somewhat general terms, and so some of the detail missing makes you have to think about what would have happened or could have happened to these young men. I would recommend seeing it for the interesting, sad, heartwarming and unfortunate life story of Ned Kelly, but more than that, if you are a fan of Heath Ledgers, will not be disappointed.
Movie Review: No second chances for Ned in this down under Western... Summary: 3 Stars
No first, really.
Story in a nutshell: Ned Kelly is falsely accused of taking a horse and sent to prison. When he gets out, the cops won't leave him or his family alone.
This show's pretty brutal about 18th century justice in the Outback. Overall, very good action flick. I could have done without the romance and I question the historical accuracy. Still, taken at face value, the film is great entertainment. Ledger and Bloom are great eye candy.
