Movie Reviews of Near Dark [UMD for PSP]Movie Review: Subterranean Homesick Blues Summary: 4 StarsReleased in '87, the same year as the fluffy vampire flick, The Lost Boys, Near Dark is an almost flawless transfusion of poetically morbid cinematic blood. It starts off a little slow, but once it gets going...you better pray for daylight.
THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN'
Ain't modern technology grand? It helped these vampires evolve. I'm guessing some laser treatment from the orthodontist took care of the fangs. Maybe the bat DNA was genetically removed by some scientists. After a couple of milleniums these dark immortals have taken Jesus as their saviour, and subsequently holy water and crucifixes no longer inflict pain. This is the new generation of blood suckers.
JUST LIKE A WOMAN
Yes. this is directed by a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. The female touch in horror is sorely lacking, for whatever reason. We know that the ladies can get crazy violent psycho, why aren't they guiding the horror genre in different directions?
Anyway, her sensitivity and compassion are evident throughout this film, with family themes and a nice sense of erotic symbolism. Oh, and there is a hypnotic dark side justunder the surface.
KNOCKIN' ON HEAVEN'S DOOR
And for the gore lovers, this has a violent plethora of the red stuff. The chaotic bar scene is brutal, funny, and shocking--plus it's reached legendary status. No CGI here, the devastation looks all too real.
I WANT YOU
So bad, please checkout this super-underrated gem of a horror movie. It is different, it might require some patience, but it is well worth the effort. A classic twist on the vampire genre.
HOW DOES IT FEEL?
To be blatantly violated? Here on Amazon I've routinely plagiarized, copied, hacked, stolen, and raped all my friends of any creative thought or artistic merit. EK, you can drop the lawsuit for copyright infringement, your patent is pending.

Summary of Near Dark [UMD for PSP]In the dusty heart of the American southwest, innocent country boy Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar of MYSTERIOUS WAYS) is seduced by a beautiful girl (Jenny Wright) into joining a roving pack of vicious drifters led by the enigmatic Jesse (Lance Henriksen of THE TERMINATOR and ALIENS). But this is no ordinary band of outlaws; Caleb is now trapped in a nightmare of soulless evil that waits in the shadows, hellish mayhem that thrives on blood and absolute horror that begins NEAR DARK. Bill Paxton (TWISTER) and Jenette Goldstein (ALIENS) co- star in this extraordinary shocker co-written and directed by Kathryn Bigelow (STRANGE DAYS). The word "vampire" is never mentioned in Near Dark, but that doesn't stop this 1987 cult favorite from being one of the best modern-era vampire films. It put then-unknown director Kathryn Bigelow on Hollywood's radar and gave choice roles to Aliens costars favored by Bigelow's ex-husband James Cameron: Lance Henriksen is the leader of a makeshift family of renegade bloodsuckers, nocturnally seeking victims in rural Oklahoma; his immortal gal pal is Aliens and Terminator 2 alumnus Jenette Goldstein; and Bill Paxton is the group's deadliest leather-clad ass kicker. Fellow traveler Jenny Wright lures Okie farm boy Adrian Pasdar into the group with a love bite, and he's soon turning toward vampirism with a combination of frightened revulsion and relentless desire. With Joshua Miller (River's Edge) as the youngest vampire, Near Dark is Bigelow's masterpiece of low-budget ingenuity--a truck-stop thriller that begins well, gets better and better (aided by a fine Tangerine Dream score), and goes out in a blaze of glory. --Jeff Shannon
