Movie Reviews of Natural Born KillersMovie Review: Choppy movie Summary: 1 StarsI felt as though the camera was clamped to a paint mixer. After about 30 minutes it gave me a headache so I turned it off.
Movie Review: One of (if not THE) most visually disturbing movies I've ever seen (and i loved it). Summary: 4 StarsThere is an old saying in which it is said that, "you don't blame Frankenstein for being a mindless killer of people, you blame the doctor that made him". In Natural Born Killers you will view what appears to be nothing less than, a waking nightmare of the result of the desensitization of the youth of America (lightly peppered with the abusive dysfunctional parenting, seen in more homes than we care to acknowledge).
If you talk to anyone who has seen this movie, and ask what they think, you will find very few lukewarm responses, for most you will find that they either love it or hate it. For those who love it i have found that they often times, have a very real understanding of America, the negative affect of the media on today's youth, and the backlash that has come as a result (and mind you that this is not all the medias fault, but also the influence of dysfunctional parents and homes found littered all over the country) . If you need an example look at John Mark Karr; the man says he raped and killed Jon Benet Ramsey, he's swarmed by the press, gets endless media coverage, and when its all over will likely sell his story to the highest bidder and become a millionaire for being a lying pervert. ONLY IN AMERICA!!!!
In Natural Born Killers you watch as a young Mickey and Mallory (victims of sexual, physical and emotional abuse)stroll through American pop culture, cutting a bloody swath of sociopath destruction wherever they go.
The worse part some find is that the ethical part of you wants to hate the two for the carnage and terror they spill wherever they go. Yet, the sad truth is, in all Americans there lies a level of blood lust that makes us want to exact revenge upon those that have hurt us (i.e. Bin Laden), and this small area hidden within us all, leaves many (well at least it left me) at some points in the movie to actually root for Mickey and Mallory (i.e. when Mickey and Mallory 'deal' with Mallory's sexually abusive father, and her mother who ignores her daughters cries for help).
The use of color, black and white, and nightmarish flashes are dare i say sublime and mesmerizing. The acting simply as good as it comes. But i will say if you live in the sugar coated world that portrays America in the wholesome buttoned down image once seen in the Laurence Welk Show avoid this movie at all cost. This movie is not for the weak, squeamish, or those blind to the reality of a generation of Natural Born Killers growing up in society today.
This movie is simply as real as it gets, it shows the mind of, the making of, and the results of a monster of Americas making.
Watch at your own risk.
Movie Review: Pretty Accurate Depiction, even if it's In Your Face Summary: 4 StarsYeah it's using a sledgehammer to drive home a point, but the point still needs to be made...our culture is driven by an obsession with violence and the inept morons who dish it out. Finding the root cause of the obsession seems a bit beyond the scope of this film, however. Here we follow a twisted love story with two anti-heroes lashing out at the world that is depicted as being crazier than they are. By the end of the story it's clear that the two ruthless killers Mickey and Mallory, are the only characters worthy of empathy (well besides the old Indian fella that Mickey unceremoniously offs, just through reflex). All along the way, Stone paints the nightmare with liberal use of cinematic distortion techniques, mostly to good effect. I thought the rattlesnake incident was some type of drug abuse allegory but I could be wrong. The most effective sequence was the perverted situation comedy outlining the female protaganist's motivation for murder. Using Rodney Dangerfield as a disgusting monster of an abusive father abetted by a canned laughtrack was at once shocking and hilarious. The Geraldo-like character was played too over the top...but was bearable. Tommy Lee Jones had a good turn as a prison warden, just as over the top. I have no idea what Quentin Tarantino had put forth here that Stone rewrote, so I'll withold judgement on whether it would have been any better. The soundtrack was pretty decent and Leonard Cohen's "The Future" playing over the closing credits was a nice touch. This coulda been better, but it's still pretty good. Certainly a cut above anything the director of record has done recently.
Movie Review: Oliver Stone's Masterwork... Summary: 5 StarsOliver Stone's take on violence and television in contemporary America. The visuals are stunning as well as the hyper violence. Downey's character is pretty much Geraldo Rivera and Jerry Springer combined, and is the biggest statement of the film.A big commentary on the glorification of violence and the insane place in American society that we have glorified celebrities of all sorts. An art film all the way. If you can handle the gore and violence, this is one of the best movies ever made and is the film that put Oliver Stone in the same league as Francis Ford Coppola,Martin Scorsese et al.....Definately one for the library.
Movie Review: a great big smack in the face of awesome filmaking Summary: 5 StarsNatural Born Killers is one of the most controversial films ever made and why would't it? a film about seriel killers? thats got to push some buttons there. not only that but several real life murders were copied of this film and even dialouge was reportedly said during the killings. so why see such a film? when it hits the right marks and pulls it off. Stone combines such wild, lush, and crazy film editing to depict the minds of Vickey and Mallory, crazy dialogue, unique story telling, and all the while poking fun at how we as the people and the media go crazy for it. the film tells of the two sociopaths in love, Vickey and Mallory, as they cut a blood soaked path across america while the public goes crazy, making them into pop culture icons. for some, they will love the movie but for others they may be turned of at the violence in the film and some of the scenes shown so just a little forwarding. but still, if your an Oliver Stone fan then this movie is a must for your collection.
