Movie Reviews of Natural Born Killers

Movie Review: A tantalizing portrait society!
Summary: 3 Stars

The well known generated controversy around this very special movie aroused extreme commentaries around the world. Oliver Stone built a provocative and corrosive parody around a couple absolutely surrounded by a sick violence atmosphere.

To my mind there were just two premises that visibly affected his final purposes; a marked excess of personal ambition and narcissist self tribute (after all who can deny his absolute domain around his discursive lexicon shown in JFK for instance), loading the screen of vertiginous visual innovations which resulted quite effective during the first ten minutes, but absolutely pernicious due the reiterative abuse of those sensationalist devices; on the other hand Stone also incurred into the orgiastic and bombastic flow he pretended to underline, being eventually dragged by this frenetic burden of violence which pitifully became a boomerang for him.

All the unjustified excesses eventually, reflect a certain lack of discursive material.

Movie Review: could have been better but i cant complain
Summary: 5 Stars

the script was origianlly by tarantino, who is a damn genius, but oliver stone scrapped that and did his own thing leaving only an original story credit to tarantinos name. this movie is not as meaningful as it was meant to be and the commentary on violence in mainstream america gets just a little bit lost, but it is still sick, twisted, and damn funny. the actors are all great in it but i think tommy lee jones is haliriously disgusting as the warden. very violent, and can be hard to watch at times. i am a fan of violence and definitely was not disappointed. to me it was just a cool movie. rodney dangerfield is as sick as he is funny too in this movie as juliette lewis's abusive father.

Movie Review: Very violent and twisted!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was eight years old when I first had seen this movie and even today, it is still one of my most favorite movies to watch. The soundtrack is just as good containing the most angry Trent Reznor and his band nine inch nails, along with other angry rock stars like Patti Smith and L7. Well anyway let's get back to the movie. The unrated version has a lot of extras that are worth getting like deleted scenes and other cool stuff. From the moment the movie starts, you will be enjoying the movie until the very end. A great movie!

Movie Review: Food for thought.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've seen this movie only once, but found it to be disturbingly insightful and honest. The movie, behind a screen of unapologetic violence shows the effects of media on how we view the world. If you're normally squeemish about violence in movies (and i am) you might have a difficult time sitting through it. However, i found that the violence was so "cartoony" that it hardly phased me. This is possibly part of the point Stone might have been trying to make about media desensitization (sp?).

A lot of people have a problem with the movie, calling it a glorification of violence. I would counter by saying that this movie glorifies violence to make its point about the atrocities of violence. I would also say that movies like "Face off," and "Die Hard" do more to glorify violence than "Natural Born Killers" ever will. Please feel free to email me with your responses to this review.

Movie Review: For anamorphic widescreen buy "Oliver Stone Collection" release
Summary: 4 Stars

This review is partly in reponse to the review by "Technopagan."

The first DVD release (2000) of Natural Born Killers is in the original theatrical aspect ratio. The problem with the original DVD release is that it is not enhanced for widescreen TVs (i.e., anamorphic). This means the film was encoded on the DVD to display within a 4:3 shape using letterboxing on the top and bottom to preserve the proper aspect ratio of the film.

(Sidenote: That does NOT mean it is a full-frame version with the top and bottom cut off to fake a widescreen image. That is an entirely different issue misunderstood by consumers who don't understand the way movies are filmed.)

Non-anamorphic DVDs appear fine on a regular TV, but they were not designed with widescreen TVs in mind. They appear "stretched" horizontally. Most widescreen TVs have modes to squish or stretch the image into the proper shape, but the results are never satisfying.

In the early days of DVD, non-anamorphic DVDs were common since consumers did not yet have widescreen TVs. I know this because I've had a DVD player since late 1997 and a widescreen display since 2003. Anyone who buys a widescreen TV will soon discover a few of these "not enhanced for 16x9 displays" DVDs in their existing collection.

By the time Natural Born Killers (NBK) was finally released on DVD in 2000, it was inexcusable to make it non-anamorphic. To add injury to insult, it was released again almost exactly a year later as part of the "Oliver Stone Collection" and enhanced for widescreen TVs. My only conclusion is that they knew they would re-release it and wanted to give people even more reason to buy (or rebuy) the newer disc.

Indeed, the "The Oliver Stone Collection" release is the version you should buy, especially if you have a widescreen TV or plan to get one eventually.

In sum, in both versions you see the film as it was shown in the theater. The only problem is that the first release was not designed with widescreen TVs in mind.
