Movie Reviews of Nancy Drew

Movie Review: Kids ages 8-13 Will Love it!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I turn 40 on June 23rd, so I am old enough to remember the Nancy Drew books that my sister had. The movie is faithful to her character. Nancy is a precocious, mature young teenager with an aptitude for cracking complex cases. The storyline follows a similar pattern to the books: Nancy gets engrossed in a mysterious case, she makes progress, people threaten her, she gets in trouble, etc.

In this particular movie, Nancy and her dad are on business in Los Angeles. They are staying at the former mansion of the late actress Dehlia Draycott, who died under notably mysterious circumstances. Nancy is fascinated by the case and works to resolve it, getting herself and her friends in hot water in the process.

If you've never read a Nancy Drew novel, then watching this movie will remind you of a Murder She Wrote episode geared toward the kids. That's what this movie is in essence (except of course that Nancy is not a writer per se).

The film makers choose to portray Nancy as a girl who likes old fashioned clothes and old fashioned ways, yet she is also contemporary (she owns an ipod and has an Apple notebook).

Some of her peers chide her for being out of touch with the times (think Brady Bunch Movie), but Nancy is secure with herself.

I took some kids from church to the movie today, and they all enjoyed it. My wife liked it, too.

Movie Review: Nancy Drew
Summary: 4 Stars

Although my wife and I enjoyed it, it is definitely geared towards younger adults. The abrupt start took adjusting to as well. Perhaps fans of the other movie or series may be use to that, but this was our first foray into videos for Nancy. Although we have read the books of course, this was our first look in this media. The cast did a good job, and the production values were top rate. Decent story, directing, music, and sets make it well worth seeing. At the very least I recommend this as a rental for families which may well end it purchasing it. I think young ladies will get the most from it, but this should be decent entertainment for all.

The story starts with Nancy solving a series of burglaries and getting the heroes thanks from the whole town. Including a prayer from them as her father and her head to California for her dads new job. Nancy promises her dad no more sleuthing but the bug is too strong and she soon relinquishes to investingating the movie stars home they are living in now. Almost forty years earlier a film star supposedly committed suicide, but Nancy isn't so sure it was suicide. She finds out that circumstances were suspicious and she was pregnant and gave her child up for adoption. Nancy enlists some local help after a uphill battle with two fashion conscious snobbish girls and a overly enamoured twelve year old boy. Good quality DVD and replayability.

Movie Review: Pleasant fun
Summary: 4 Stars

Nancy Drew is a small town high school girl who accompanies her father to Hollywood for an extended stay. She is also a highly competent amateur detective who has set her sights on investigating the death of a starlet before they even hit town. Unfortunately, while Nancy is beloved by all in her hometown of River Heights, she is rejected by her new classmates in LA, and finds the bad guys a whole lot more dangerous than the ones she left behind.

I've never read any of the Nancy Drew books, so I can't compare the film to the any of the novels. On its terms, the movie is surprisingly entertaining and Emma Roberts is unbelievably charismatic in the title role. She comes across as highly intelligent, caring, ethical, and likeable. The story revolves around a 20 year old murder mystery that is not terribly original but is still fairly interesting. The movie runs a little over an hour and half, and is well paced throughout.

No one is likely to confuse Nancy Drew with a truly great movie, but it is enjoyable. Despite the PG-13 rating there isn't much reason not to watch it with pre-teens. It's a pretty wholesome affair and the "scares" are pretty nominal. The word that probably best describes the film is "cute" and that's not a bad thing. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun romp of a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

Movie Review: Refreshing and Sweet
Summary: 4 Stars

I'd describe this version of Nancy Drew as the original Nancy -- colorized with neon. Everything feels fifties nifty but there is an extra spark in Nancy that screams of new century empowered female. Emma Roberts is charming and the movie quirky and campy. There could be some fear inducing moments in an old house with a mystery, but Nancy's lack of fear keeps the suspense level down.

Nancy still makes for great role model material, especially in her confidence and peer-proofed love of life and sense of responsibility. She does deceive her dad which tarnishes her a bit, but she comes clean. If my girls were younger we'd have a conversation about the trouble with that choice. Some adults are out-witted by Nancy, including police officers, but Nancy shows them kindness.

I'd use caution for really sensitive little girls, otherwise, Nancy makes for a fun, clean movie.

Movie Review: One of the best remakes yet!
Summary: 4 Stars

I have a seven year old with a vivid imagination (she got scared watching The Veggie Tales ®/Pirates Who Don't Do Anything and Me! (Big Idea Books® / VeggieTales®)) so I was a little leery letting her watch this one. I was relieved and delighted to find Nancy Drew had just enough excitement that, although she was scared, Ashley made it through.

Nancy Drew gives the young a hero who is neither rude or overly sensual. Nancy is a spunky teen that sticks to her unique style, despite peer pressure to conform. The romance is perfect for little girls, complete with a kiss at the end of the show.

I recommend this movie kids of all ages. It is a breath of fresh air despite the age of the original conception.
