Movie Reviews of Nancy DrewMovie Review: Delightful 'Spin' on Classic Heroine... Summary: 5 Stars
Andrew Fleming's 2007 update of "Nancy Drew" is worth cheering about! Wonderfully cast (16-year-old Emma Roberts is perfect in the lead), filled with the humor and mystery that have made Mildred Wirt Benson's books popular for four generations, the film updates Drew without sacrificing the elements that make her special.
Accompanying her father (Tate Donovan...remember when HE was a teen star?) on an assignment in California, Nancy tackles the mystery behind the long disappearance and subsequent suicide of a movie queen (the ever-radiant Laura Elena Harring), while trying to adjust to the 21st century high school lifestyle (shades of "The Brady Bunch"!). She quickly finds herself a target of some very unpleasant thugs, the bane of a grumpy caretaker (Marshall Bell), and the potential savior of the actress' previously unknown daughter (the wonderful Rachael Leigh Cook). Along with her longtime beau, Ned Nickerson (Max Thieriot), she is joined in her investigation by chubby dynamo, Corky (Josh Flitter)...can even the most dastardly villain stand a chance against our spunky heroine?
With wonderful support by Barry Bostwick, as a millionaire with his own agenda, the legendary Pat Carroll as a busybody Realtor, and Daniella Monet and Kelly Vitz as her high school 'competition' (and watch for a funny cameo by a certain actor named Bruce, as well!), the film never loses a sense of fun, and is perfect family entertainment.
I sincerely hope there will be a sequel!
Movie Review: Best of 2007 Summary: 5 Stars
Andrew Fleming's motion picture "Nancy Drew" (2007 DVD) is a fun, wholesome, and clever who-done-it murder mystery. Stepping from the mid 20th century teenage sleuth genre this flick brings a refreshing view from Hollywood.
Emma Roberts, in the title role, gives viewers a fresh, happy, and energetic portrayal. Nancy's world is rapt with fascination for the hunt, reflection upon complex clues, and determination to catch the bad guy(s), all while trying to make that world a better place. In the end, Nancy solves the murder, makes new friends all around, and shows how persistence and positive attitude always accomplishes good.
This is a fun safe flick! There is no foul language, no nudity, and no provocative innuendo. The teenage romance (between Nancy and boyfriend Ned) is innocent sporting only a brief kiss during the final scene. (Kudos to Bruce Willis for a cameo in this wholesome film.)
This screenplay depicts an interesting mystery that an innovative teenager with imagination and courage solves. Nancy is faced by a complex and demanding world that she justly confronts and overcomes. The character Nancy Drew continues to be role model material.
"Nancy Drew" novel aficionados will be well pleased with this presentation. This movie/DVD is well done and recommended to whole family.
Movie Review: It's John Hughes meets Sherlock Holmes! This was a marvelous, feel-good, 80's-type film! Summary: 5 Stars
As a guy who grew up during the 80's, I can really appreciate the amazing comback that the 80's seems to be making during the mid-2000's. Examples: Transformers, TMNT, and now, John Hughes-type teenie bopper flicks like "Nancy Drew" making their current appearance, I say, "Bring it on!" This film has to one of the most fun since "Mannequin" (another one of my favorite 80's flicks). Basically, the film is a perfect mix of a John Hughes film and a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Highly enjoyable. Also, Emma Roberts is splendid as Nancy and I feel she nailed the part very well. I never read any of the Nancy Drew books, but they sound a lot like my favorite boy detective Encyclopedia Brown so I probably would enjoy them.
Basically, this is a film that will be enjoyed by all. Also, to get an idea of just how much the eighties seems to really be coming back, listen for the awesome new song at the end of the movie entitled "When Did Your Heart Go Missing?" by the fairly new group Rooney. Awesome eighties-style indie synth pop rock!
Movie Review: A Great Film For EVERYONE! Summary: 5 Stars
I don't understand the negative reviews this film is getting from some people. I watched this with my four year old daugeter and was amazed at how entertained she was by it and surprised that I actually enjoyed it as much as I did.
I never got into the books but was thirteen when The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries was on TV and watched every show. I wanted to Be Joe Hardy singing "Da Doo Ron Ron" to Nancy Drew. I was really dissapointed when they dropped Nancy's stories and continued with just the Hardy Boys.
Anyway, I really hope they make more of these movies with Emma Roberts who did a really outstanding job keeping my daughter's attention for the entire film (a first for a live action film). I'm also hopeful that Pamela Sue Martin makes an appearence since she is "my" Nancy Drew.
Give this movie a chance then move on to the novels and other film/tv versions of the character. I look at like I do "Batman", no matter how bad it is or who plays the role I'm just happy they keep making more.
Movie Review: The Movie That Will Keep You On Your Feet Because it is SO Good!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Nancy drew the movie was so awsome. I got to see it on the day it came out on theatures and boy did I enjoy IT. This movie is awsome and they did a good job keeping the real nancy Drew character. For I have read alot of Nancy drew books and her personality really showed in the movie. They even gave the movie a fair rating. For this movie did earn a PG sign for it is a murder case in a way. I thought this movie was well done and any kid 9 and up would love it. Some adults might say it only worth 2 stars but that's because they are not kids and aren't use to good clean kids movies. So in my eyes this movie is 5 big juicy stars and earned each and everyone of them. So if you haven't seen this wonderful movie yet I think you should try to get hold of one as soon as possiable ,for this movie is so good. So don't wait watch it. Because Nancy Drew is a great movie and is better than most movies I have seen.
