Movie Reviews of Naked Boys SingingMovie Review: Well, I don't TOTALLY regret buying this... Summary: 3 Stars
This film does indeed deliver what its' title says. It is an amalgam of men (not the off-putting "boys") singing mostly clever songs in mostly adequate voices. The guys are cute and unself-conscious, but lack a certain genuine connection at many points of the show. Some were misused in certain numbers. Attractive guy+ Good voice doesn't automatically = a good casting fit. I liked this DVD overall, and recommend it ...ultimately.
Movie Review: Title: 10 Execution: 2 Summary: 2 Stars
Interesting concept and intriguing title. I suspect it was very entertaining to see the show live. I'm sure the sheer outrageousness of the concept had it's own entertainment value. However, instead of presenting the titillating entertainment suggested by the title, the DVD version aspires to higher things but is merely a real letdown. With a title like that, you either have to deliver the goods or showcase a production that surprises and delights the imagination. The show itself does not have much of the latter. The DVD has neither.
It's almost as if the egos involved were embarrassed by their original concept and what the show is about. The editing is very choppy, mostly cutting between wide shots and tight close-ups, and you are left with little recourse but to focus on mostly uneven performances and vocal quality, as well as generally mediocre writing and staging.
Do they not understand why many people would buy this disc?
Yes, the boys are naked and they sing (some quite well), and the faces and bodies are mostly, well, arresting at least. But in person one's eyes can wander where they will when the seemingly endless production numbers go on way too long. The DVD does not give you that option. Unfortunately, you are forced to pay attention to a production whose basic premise is without subtlety, whose shock value quickly disappears, and a lot of head shots of performers supposedly without clothes.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not really criticizing the stage production. I wasn't there. I suspect sheer audaciousness carried the day, and there are moments and performances that work. I was also amazed to watch performers who could be so open and comfortable without the benefit of clothing. That takes guts and talent, or at least a huge dose of exhibitionism.
I'm criticizing a DVD that goes out of the way to highlight all the many weaknesses of the show. I get really agitated when what purports to be professional is done so sloppily. I suspect the editing was meant to satisfy a few egos. If you are not one of those, the DVD will make you resent the price of admission. I know I do.
Movie Review: Not Too Great, Not Too Bad Summary: 2 Stars
Let's start with the negatives first:
1) The singing is often off-key. These guys obviously weren't chosen for their vocal technique.
2) The stage dressings and sets are drab or non-existent. Nothing to look at...except naked boys running around. It's fun for the first ten minutes or so, but after that...ho-hum.
3) I would not pay to go see this in person; I fell asleep the first time I watched it.
Now the positive things:
1) Only a couple songs were clever and memorable. Some of my favorites were "The Gay Maid" and "Perky Little Porn Star."
2) This video WILL offend conservatives and most Christians. That's a plus!
3) The added featurettes on the DVD are interesting to watch. They detail how and why the video was made, etc..
Movie Review: Not my thing Summary: 2 Stars
I admit I was tempted by the title. Naked boys! And they sing! Well...After 10 minutes I realized that I was not the target audience of this film.
First and foremost the eye catcher of this title, the naked boys, wears off quickly...Unless you are a desperate, who hasn't seen a naked man for a while.
Otherwise, the view of 10 men jumping naked on a stage becomes slightly idiotic after two or three songs (and I think it was the last thing the director had in mind).
What's more...It is a musical (kind of), so there are no spoken dialogues, thus the film is really hard to digest (if you are not a fan of this kind of movies).
I give the second star for the song about a naked maid :)
Movie Review: Nothing to see Summary: 1 Stars
Their gimmick is that they're naked. That's it. The songs are lame too. Ok, the song "Nothing but the Radio on" is clever, but that's only a couple of minutes in an entire show. Really not worth buying or even renting.
