Movie Reviews of NYPD Blue - Season 1

Movie Review: Super Fantastic First Season "David Caruso" # 1
Summary: 5 Stars

Great cast, great trama. David Caruso is the base of this show, to bad is only one season with David.

Movie Review: One of the best cop shows ever!
Summary: 4 Stars

It's funny to think that at one time NYPD Blue was considered too lewd and sexual, but it was. It broke television boundaries and became one of the best police drama shows of all times. While it definitely went on longer than it should have, the first few seasons (especially the first) are made-up some of the best shows of all-time.

Season one was the only full season that Detective John Kelly (David Caruso) was in, and the show was never quite the same to me after that. Detective Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) was probably the best possible replacement for Andy's partner, but no one could ever quite replace John Kelly. Thanks to the terrific job David Caruso did as playing the intriguing and complex John Kelly, season one is definitely the best out of the series.

What also makes season one (along with the first three seasons to a degree) stand out is the grittiness and how real the characters are. Starting around the fourth season we start to get more cliche, boring characters who you'd never really see in the NYPD. Lots of supermodely type girls (come on, are we supposed to believe EVERY girl cop in the NYPD is drop dead gorgeous?) and unnecessary love drama. Andy starts messing with and marrying every girl in sight, and everyone in the office is hooking up. In the first couple seasons I feel like I'm seeing real relationships at work. Tragic love and true passion, it's corny at times, but at least it feels right.

If you're a NYPD Blue fan or have an interest in cop shows, you must get this. While lots of TV DVD sets are a rip-off, this is a real bargain. Look at it - 22 hours for $30! If you love this show, I also recommend Homicide: Life on the Streets, my only cop show that I actually like better than NYPD Blue.

Movie Review: Easily the Best Season
Summary: 4 Stars

Vastly overrated as a drama and police procedural--"Barney Miller" did much of the same thing in half an hour, even with the laughs--"NYPD Blue" nonetheless benefits from a hard-edged first season that is never eclipsed in the run of the entire series. Say what you will about David Caruso, he is simply magnificent as Detective John Kelly, a hotheaded but oft-restrained boy scout who is the anchor point around which everything in the show's galaxy swirls, including the self-destructive efforts of his angry partner, Sipowicz (Dennis Franz). The show would become slower and more maudlin and soap-operatic once Caruso left, shifting attention to Sipowicz, perhaps the unluckiest stereotype of a Polish-American ever to blot the screen, but there are more than a few gripping and effective moments throughout this season. Of course, Sipowicz isn't the only stereotype, as there are the standard Jewish neurotics, Irish blowhards, Italian mobsters, and others that Hollywood so frequently counts on, even if "NYPD Blue" (and the various "Law and Order" incarnations) continues the bizarre trend of making New York seem a lot less racially diverse than it really is. Nonetheless, the location shooting adds to a flavor of verisimilitude that is satisfying for a small-screen venture, and Mike Post's minimalist score is right on target.

Movie Review: Good cop drama!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is television writing at a superior level. The stories in each episode mesh in a compelling
way with the arc of the season. The actors are superior and well chosen. I particularly like that
the actors are not Hollywood beautiful people but are more atypically attractive. The drawbacks
to the series so far are the ham-handed music and the irritating device of jumpy camera work.
These flaws were not enough to keep me from being enthralled by the series and looking forward to each disc.

Movie Review: all around good show
Summary: 4 Stars

Although it starts off kind of slow and hard to follow, by the third or fourth episode, I was hooked. Probably Caruso's best TV, including the CSI he's on now. Character development is excellent, decent amounts of action without lots of gore, and the writing is superb. Well worth picking up to fill in the gaps of nothing to watch on network tv.
