In 1942 there was a "screwball" comedy called "My Sister Eileen." It starred Janet Blair as Eileen and Rosalind Russell as her sister. It was an ok film, but not (in my humble estimation) a classic. In the next decade Leonard Bernstein did a score to a Comden/Green musical based on the same material with Rosalind Russell again playing the sister. It was a smash. Columbia wanted to make a film of it but could not work out a deal so, in grand Hollywood fashion, they did their own version. The 1955 "My Sister Eileen" is an excellent example of how to remake films. They take an ok original and do something wonderful with it (Why remake a film that is great to begin with? For example: remaking "The Day the Earth Stood Still." The very idea is an outrage! What next? A remake of "Citizen Kane" ?! But I digress). The musical has a superb score by the great Jule Styne and a terrific cast. Janet Leigh (never lovlier) plays Eileen and Betty Garrett (Never better, and that's saying something as she is great) is her sister. A young Bob Fosse not only choreographs (Magnificently) but plays Eileen's love interest. Dick York, a full decade before "Bewitched" plays a "wacky" neighbor and a young Jack Lemmon plays a potential employer. The script is by the director Richard Quine (Who, interestingly enough, played the Fosse role in the 1942 film) and a young Blake Edwards. This is a very enjoyable film with great musical numbers and terrific dancing. Well worth your time. It will brighten your day and the "Bandstand" number will be stuck in your head for days (This is a good thing as it is delightful). Do not let a languid first 10 minutes throw you. This film will become a favorite.
