Movie Reviews of My Favorite Year

Movie Review: A Movie To Perk The Spirits
Summary: 5 Stars

This 1982 movie, My Favorite Year, directed by Richard Benjamin, is my all-time favorite Peter O'Toole film in which he is both amusing and heart-tugging. He creates, in the character of an aging, swashbuckling movie idol - now in an almost constantly inebriated state - a character who is totally charming and entertaining. Mark Linn-Baker,the rookie writer for the King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade, and destined to be in charge of keeping O'Toole in line long enough to present properly on an early - and unbeknownst to O'Toole - live TV program, is a complete delight, as is Joseph Bologna who plays King Kaiser, the star of the TV production.

The casting for this movie is superb...Bill Macy, who portrays one of the writers for the King Kaiser Show, is about as good as it gets. And Laine Kazan, playing Linn-Baker's Brooklyn mother is a hoot and a half.

If you want to watch one movie that will make you laugh and lift your spirits, make it this one. You certainly won't regret it. Could easily become one of your favorite movies, too.

Movie Review: Classic Comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

MY FAVORITE YEAR, directed by Richard Benjamin, is one of the finest comedies to be made over the past 50 years. The homage to the "Golden Age of TV" features a great cast, from Peter O'Toole, Mark Linn-Baker, Jessica Harper and especially Joseph Bologna who is absolutely hilarious as King Kaiser, a thinly veiled Sid Caesar.

While everyone is wonderful, it is Bologna's portrayal of the ego-maniacal Kaiser that puts it over the top for me. He shows a marvelous sense of comic timing and his loveable wise-guy (sort of a TV Bugs Bunny if you can imagine that).

The film is a mixture of wit, pathos, slapstick and physical dexterity. It is one of my favorite movies and one that stands up to numerous watchings.

The finale is one of the best I have ever seen in a comedy. There are so many unique "moments" in the film that it is difficult to mention them all. The cast is a stellar ensemble, the writing is sparkling, and the cinematography recreates the 50's with complete integrity.

A great movie!

Movie Review: My Favorite Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

Actually, its almost impossible for me to pick what "my absolute favorite movie" is, but MY FAVORITE YEAR is definitely in the running for that title.

Peter O'Toole is fantastic in this. I honestly can't think of anyone else who would have been a better choice to play Alan Swann. O'Toole is perfectly cast in the role.

Everyone else in the cast is great, too. Mark Linn-Baker, Joseph Bologna, Lainie Kazan, etc. - they're all brilliant in this.

As for the story itself, I love it. MY FAVORITE YEAR is hilarious, but its also very touching in parts. Writing this review has made me anxious to watch the movie again (and I've probably already seen it at least two dozen times.)

A great thing about the dvd is director Richard Benjamin's commentary. A lot of dvd commentaries are boring to listen to, but Benjamin's is both very informative and very entertaining.

If you've never seen MY FAVORITE YEAR, I very highly recommend it to you. It's entertaining in every way that a movie should be.

Movie Review: a great throwback to another era of humor.........
Summary: 5 Stars

MY FAVORITE YEAR is a loving tribute to the old series, "Your Show of Shows." On this show, Alain Swan (Peter O'Toole) a legend, comparable to swashbuckler Errol Flynn (of THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD), is to make an appearance on the variety program. The problem? Swan is a notorious alcoholic and has been hitting the sauce QUITE heavily, by the time the producers and staff encounter him around the time of production of this live show. Enter Benji (a very young Mark Lynn-Baker), the studio peon, who has been delegated as Swan's assistant and babysitter. He is to make sure that Swan doesn't get into too much trouble, and that he stays dry upon going on the air with the rest of the cast. As a side note, Swan is also a notorious womanizer. Is there any possiblity that this man can even be controlled? Well, you'll have to watch the film and find out for yourself.

Peter O'Toole received a well-deserved Academy Award nomination for this role, and I really think he should have won. This film is very funny and entertaining.

Movie Review: A true gem in comedy movies
Summary: 5 Stars

"In 1954, television was live and comedy was king". An era before my time maybe, but still a memorable time to bring us back to from 1982 (the year this movie came out). Veteran "movie star" Peter O'Toole plays fictional veteran "movie star" Alan Swann who has to appear on a live comedy series for the first time. Mark Linn Baker (in his first role, before he would be famous as Larry on Perfect Strangers) as the young writer on the staff who has to keep him sober til show night. Other cast members include Bill Macy as the head writer, Joe Bologna as the star of series, Cameron Mitchell as a gangster who Bologna spoofs in one of his skits, Lani Kazan as Baker's mother (she would reprise the role in a Broadway musical remake in the 90s) and Lou Jacobi as his (Baker's) uncle. An extremely funny movie all around. Especially the climax scene where O'Toole and Bologna beat up the gangster's henchmen in front of the studio audience AND the television audience.
