Movie Review: Colonel Potter's Favorite Film Summary: 4 Stars
In a famous episode of M*A*S*H morale is quite low and to raise spirits Colonel Potter arranges a screening of his favorite movie: My Darling Clementine.
Any film version of The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, starring Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp and directed by John Ford would have to be a significant piece of work, but I found this film less than what I would hope. Fonda is good, to be certain, but this is not only not close to his best film work, it's not close to his best Western. (I'd vote for The Ox-Bow Incident.) Ford's direction is succinct, to the point where even major characters are drawn in a kind of short-hand in the abbreviated hour and a half run time. It is not only not Ford's best work, it's not even close to Westerns such as The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance It's not even the best collaboration between Fonda and Ford - I'd recommend The Grapes of Wrath or Mister Roberts (Keepcase) for that one. It's also not the best screen treatment of the story of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral - I greatly prefer the much more entertaining Tombstone with Kurt Russell, Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton and Val Kilmer as the tubercular Doc Holliday.
Doc is played by Victor Mature here as a disillusioned surgeon. Many of the characters seem of the "tortured soul" variety, but you're left to guess the etiology of the torture.
Walter Brennan is cast against type as cantankerous and murderous Old Man Clanton, and Tim Holt and the always reliable Ward Bond play Wyatt's brothers Virgil and Morgan respectively. Linda Darnell plays the saucy Chihuahua (I know....) and Cathy Downs plays the relatively minor but title character Clementine Carter, Doc Holliday's old girlfriend.
I have less of an issue with the fast-and-loose liberties Ford takes with the actual story of the Earps and the Clantons than the fact that he has made such a shallow movie out of such rich material. Before you're settled into your seat well, the shooting's over.
Movie Review: PERFECT FILM, AS CLOSE TO PERFECT LOOKING ON DVD Summary: 4 Stars
"My Darling Clementine" is the tragic western/melodrama that pits the likes of Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda)and Doc Halladay (Victor Mature)against the vicious Clanton (Walter Brennan) for a showdown at the O.K. Corral. Linda Darnell cuts a handsome/tragic figure as the saloon hall girl with a heart of gold. On par with "High Noon", "My Darling Clementine" is a western that, once seen, is never to be forgotten. TRANSFER: KUDOS to Fox. Their DVD is head and shoulders above previously issued VHS and laserdisc versions of this eternal classic. The black and white picture is very well balanced, with solid blacks and an exceptional spectrum of tonal grays. Film grain is evident throughout - as it should be. There are no digital anomalies for a picture that is smooth, solid and wholly enjoyable. Occasionally there is a slight jump in the image, during certain splices or cuts from one scene to the next, but these are vintage imperfections which do not detract from your visual enjoyment. The audio has been remixed to stereo and is nicely balanced. EXTRAS: We get the original theatrical cut and the preview cut of the film. Apparantly, Darryl F. Zanuck was none too impressed with John Ford's original version - cutting it down by a half hour and altering several key scenes. These are painstakingly re-created by film archivist, Robert Gitt, in a mini-documentary on the making of the film. Very nicely done. BOTTOM LINE: An absolute must for film lovers and DVD collectors.
Movie Review: A first rate movie! Summary: 4 Stars
Historical only in that the Earps and Clantons indeed had a gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone. Everything else is pure fantasy... fantastic fantasy. Henry Fonda plays a laid-back Wyatt Earp who doesn't mind allowing others their space, but stands firm when they cross the line.Well scripted, well acted, a western that should appeal even to those who normally wouldn't watch a western. The good guys are well developed, multi-dimensional and likable. The bad guys, especially usually lovable Walter Brennan, are obviously evil. Enough action, enough intrigue, enough romance.
Movie Review: Fantastic Story Based upon the Earps Summary: 4 Stars
This is one of the great Western films. It cannot be stressed enough that the viewer should not attempt to compare the film though with the actual events. The phrase "loosely based upon" is fitting to describe this film and its portrayal of the famous gunfight.
As the Amazon summation says "Ford takes great liberties with history, bending the story to fit his ideal of the West, a balance of social law and pioneer spirit". Henry Fonda is excellent in his portrayal of Wyatt Earp and the supporting cast make this an enjoyable film.
