Movie Reviews of My Darling Clementine

Movie Review: A perfect, though unusual western
Summary: 5 Stars

A perfectly realized western, retelling the classic story of the shootout at the OK Corral... Henry Fonda first appears onscreen as a grizzled, shaggy cattleman, soon revealed to be the legendary lawman, Wyatt Earp. Walter Brennan excels as the heartless patriarch of the Clanton family, whose sons draw Earp into an unavoidable blood feud. Brennan's performance, like Fonda's, is magnificently understated, as is pretty much everything else about this film -- director John Ford embues every scene with an economy of presentation that takes the western genre into the level of high art. Everything about this film rings true... well, other than the romantic melodrama surrounding 'Doc' Holliday, and Victor Mature's mannered portrayal of the tubercular gunman... with fronteir life evoked with the same richness of detail that Ford later recreated in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence." Here, though, the choke of dry dust and sense of fast danger are much more present. The Clantons are a much more sinister set of badmen than Lee Marvin's exaggerated schoolyard bullies; Brennan and his boys simply sidle up and ooze menace and dark violence. The B&W cinematography is typically gorgeous, and Ford never misses a beat in his calm, patient direction. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Perfection on Celluloid
Summary: 5 Stars

It's unfortunate for all of us that the people who probably decide on which movies at the major studios are to be converted to DVD are either ignorant of what the public wants or their inability to sit still and watch a black and white movie. In 1977, a series of films were released to theaters across America entitled, "That's Hollywood". In it, some careful explanations were shown to viewers about what made some films so technically perfect and John Ford's films stole center stage when Hollywood Westerns were profiled.

Red River, The Searchers, My Darling Clementine and the Magnificent Seven are not only the best of the best, they are also the most enjoyable. The scene where Henry Fonda is sitting on a chair on the porch with his feet propped up against the awning post was an impromptu idea from Fonda and Ford liked it so much that he had Fonda bouncing from one foot and then the other, much like a kid who was trying to figure out what to do on a sunny day. Ward Bond's donkey laugh and Linda Darnell's tossed pitcher of milk were also something that Ford couldn't resist inserting into the film.

The cast, direction, story, and location were perfect.

Would someone please wake up the folks at TCF and get them to "DVDize" this magnificent film, please?

Movie Review: Genuine, Pure, and Real
Summary: 5 Stars

A true film masterpiece in every sense of the word! Henry Fonda, John Ford, this is what movies are all about! They don't make movies this good anymore. They just don't. "My Darling Clementine" is pure. It isn't fake and doesn't make the critical error of ever trying too hard. It doesn't have to fake a thing: the talent is there in droves!

This DVD is a fine piece of work, and about time too. A good sharp, clean picture, in a fullscreen 1.33:1 screen ratio. The sound is fine as well. There's a "pre-release version" on the "B side" of the disk as well, and a good film commentary track.

This film speaks for itself. It's a beautiful movie. One of the all-time greats. If you haven't, you need to see this movie, at least two or three times in your life. You won't regret it. John Ford was a natural. This is one of Henry Fonda's best roles as Wyatt Earp. I enjoyed it immensely and am proud to add it to my permanent DVD collention.

Movie Review: YOU CAN'T BEAT A JOHN FORD WESTERN!
Summary: 5 Stars

"My Darling Clementine" is director John Ford's version of "the Gunfight at the OK Corral",and it is done in the best Ford manner.Henry Fonda(first-rate)plays Wyatt Earp,Victor Mature(fine) is "Doc" Holliday, and Walter Brennan(excellant) as "old man Clanton".Also starring are the stunning Linda Darnell,as Holidays' girl in Tombstone and Cathy Downs(excellant as Clementine) as his girl from back in Boston. To me,the best scences are those of Fonda and the glowing Miss Downs,at the church dance. The photography-great,as are Ward Bond and Alan Mowbray, among others in support. The commetary is NOT up to the standards of the film.Scott Eyman is dead wrong,in his opinion that "Ford couldn't direct woman-see Maureen O'Hara in a host of Ford films and Miss Downs in this film.Mr.Eyman is also wrong in regard to Linda Darnell,he vastly underrates her.Included,in the DVD, are BOTH 1946 pre-release version (Fords and the better of the two)and the Zanuck approved version.

Movie Review: This DVD is a winner all the way
Summary: 5 Stars

Kudos to Fox for another outstanding job in their studio classics series. This DVD has glorious transfers of two versions of the film. The pre-release version is about 7 minutes longer, and has less music than the final version. Most of the added footage does not really make a great difference to the film, but I found that the same scenes without the music played better than they do with it -- more naturalistic and less "Hollywood." A nice little documentary shows the differences, using memos from Daryl Zanuck to explain some of what happened and why. Apparently, Ford's original version was about 30 minutes longer, but those other 20 odd minutes have been lost. The final release version includes an informative commentary by a John Ford expert and by Wyatt Earp III. This is truly one of the great westerns, and a definite must-have for anyone who likes the genre, likes John Ford, and/or is a Henry Fonda fan.
