Movie Reviews of My Blue HeavenMovie Review: The Humor in Theft Summary: 4 Stars
This is an interesting movie. It's a comedy about a sleazeball in the mob (Steve Martin) who is protected by the FBI witness protection program until he testifies for a few very important trials. He is moved to a pleasant town in surburban America and is given the non-Italian name of Todd Wilkinson. Naturally, he decides to get in trouble by going out and stealing things, not giving a hoot about how much he hurts the FBI or the small town he's in. He REALLY upsets the town's Assistant District Attorney (Joan Cusack) and the FBI agent responsible for his safety (Rick Moranis). In the middle of his crooked endeavors, he manages to do some good things as well. He gives Moranis advice about opening up and meeting women and he raises money to start a little league park. It's a funny story about how even the biggest crook in the world can somehow manage to do good and wonderful things every once in a GREAT while.
My favorite elements in this movie are the cast, and the lame excuses Martin gives after he's arrested on several occassions for stealing. Martin, Cusack, and Moranis are good in darn near any role, and this movie gives these performers great roles that each of them can identify with and bring humor to.
What's Martin's excuse for having twenty-five copies of a book after he's caught stealing a load of stuff? "In case I want to read it more than once."
Even after such blatant criminal behavior and lies, Martin still suffers little to no punishment for his actions. With no ethics whatsoever, he steals everything from a car to a swordfish and then tries to blame it on other people. I can't help laughing at it. Such perversion of justice is just so darn funny.
Maybe not a classic, but by all means a great movie; any way you look at it.
Movie Review: New York mobster in southwest paradise Summary: 4 Stars
Although slightly inferior to MY COUSIN VINNY, Steve Martin's MY BLUE HUSBAND is also a variation of the old city mouse/country mouse theme, and a terrifically funny one at that. Martin, Moranis, and Cusack are a great team and turn their usual solid performances.Other reviewers have done a good job of giving you the basic plot outline, so I won't bog you down with that again. But I can't refrain from mentioning my favorite scene. Vinnie (Martin) hunts for arugala in a huge supermarket. Being far from Manhattan, this Italian vegetable is impossible to find in the white bread and mayo southwest. As his frustration mounts, and after countless "Have a nice days" from the clerks, Vinnie explodes with a resounding "F**k YOU!" It sounds crude but it is not gratuitous. Because we understand Vinnie's outrage, we understand his outburst. Director Herbert Ross does an admirable job of pacing this film, as he does in drawing out the best possible performances from his cast. MY BLUE HEAVEN is one of those sleeper films that many people haven't heard of, but once they see it, they love it.
Movie Review: One Of Martn's Funnier Efforts Summary: 4 Stars
Steve Martin has done so many good things that I wouldn't say what's his funniest performance but it ranks up there. His Italian hoodlum accent is funny and the unique character he plays, "Vinnie Antonelli" is very entertaining to see and hear.
This isn't a laugh-out-loud-type of comedy but a pleasant one all the way through with good subtle humor. The first half of the story was much better than the second half. It gets cornier as it goes on. Martin's supporting cast - Rick Moranis and Joan Cusack - don't quite cut it as an FBI man and district attorney, respectively, being ridiculous clown-type characters but, hey, this isn't supposed to be taken seriously.
The language is very tame, especially for a PG-13 film. It's just a nice lighthearted comedy, worth a look or two. I saw it three times and by then, that was enough. The DVD version I saw wasn't a whole lot better than the tape with poor surround sound and a so-so transfer.
Movie Review: Actually, FBI men love this film! Summary: 4 Stars
My Blue Heaven is Director Herb Ross' fish out of water story of a New York mafioso (Steve Martin) relocated to suburban San Diego under the watchful eye of neurotic FBI agent Rick Moranis.
Martin, a broad actor, is perfectly suited to play the flamboyant ganster trying to adapt to the whitebread wholesomeness of suburbia and Moranis' comedic talents are well-suited to the role, as he and Martin learn from one another.
The film is consistently, continuously side-splittingly funny without ever descending into bad camp. Many critics thought the depiction of mafiosi and witness relocation was over the top but I've read interviews where FBI men involved in the program say this side-splitting tale is the most realistic.
This is an upbeat, cleverly-written, and nicely edited film with a light soundtrack and some subtle dynamics.
Don't miss a chance to put this one in your collection for regular viewings!
