Movie Reviews of My Bloody ValentineMovie Review: Anyday Of The Year Can Become A Horror Movie! Summary: 3 Stars
Pretty much thanks to John Carpenters classic "Halloween" (1978) any day of the year can become a horror film; "Friday The 13th" (1980), "Mother's Day" (1980) "April Fool's Day" (1986) etc.
So on to "My Bloody Valentine" (1981). Synopsis: 20 years ago, supervisors of a mine shaft abandoned their post to attend a Valentine's party, leaving five miners trapped after an explosion. The lone survivor, Harry Warden, was institutionalized, and returned to town a year later to murder the two responsible, promising to return should the town ever again recognize Valentine's Day. Trying to put the horror behind them a group of young adults decide to try and throw a Valentine's Day dance. Needless to say, a maniacal killer begins to hunt them down and slaughter them one by one.
"My Bloody Valentine" is a let down compared to many of the other early 80's slasher flicks, in my opinion. The acting is really poor (even for a horror film), there's very little suspense and very little imagination(in other words things done in this film had been done before. Although the human heart in the heart shaped candy box added a nice twist). The score is lackluster at best, adding no sense of suspense, and the effects are nothing to write home about.
Recommended to die hard fans of the genre only.
Movie Review: Slightly above average slasher that deserves a special edition Summary: 3 Stars
Made during a time when the slasher film was really starting to display box office power (first Halloween, then Friday the 13th, and so on with the holiday-themed slashers), My Bloody Valentine managed to set itself apart from the rest of the pack due to the fact that there was actually a nice deal of suspense and the kills weren't entirely predictable. The story involves a Valentine's Day celebration in a town where a mining tragedy occured some time before, and a murderous miner that is sending out human hearts in heart shaped Valentine's boxes in return. My Bloody Valentine isn't bad one bit, and considering the bit of stir it conjured up when originally released and slapped with an X-rating, you'd figure that Paramount would have at least re-inserted all the gore-laden cuts. Sadly this is not the case, nor are there any special features either, which makes this DVD reminiscent of the early Friday the 13th DVD releases. Hopefully, someday Paramount will release a special edition of My Bloody Valentine that the film deserves, but until then, gorehounds and slasher fans will just have to settle for this. If you've never seen My Bloody Valentine and you dig old slasher flicks, you'll probably dig this for the most part.
Movie Review: Better be BLOODY good! Summary: 3 Stars
The date is June 24th, 2002, a little over two months before the release of My Bloody Valentine comes to dvd. So I can't give a definate dvd review. But, I wait with baited breath and crossed fingers for my hopes may be dashed if Paramount Pictures does their usual slap-together mode of producing a cherished film on dvd. It is very well known among horror fans that MBV was mercilessly cut upon release. And now that those extra minutes are known to be out there, I can only hope Paramount with do us fans the service of releasing it uncut, widescreen, remastered, with the trailer. Why it is so hard for them to include trailers esapes me like a panicked greased pig! Trailers are great to include so you can show someone who doesn't know the film, what it's like, rather than sit through a half hour or two and then they decide it's not for them. I love the movie and would give it 5 stars only if director George Milhalka is given his original vision. .... With the over-the-top gory movies that have come out since, I think we can handle this now!! If other fans agree, lets start campaigning now!
Movie Review: I liked this movie Summary: 3 Stars
Its about a minor who comes back to kill people in some town called 'Valentines Bluff'. He wants revenge on his supervisor who left him and his crew members to die in the mine, coincidentally, on Valentines Day. He was the only survivor.
The story revolves around some 20 something year olds and the goings on around the town. Some kind of lovers triangle between 3 of them throughout the movie, meanwhile the minor is all around town killing people and soon everyone ends up going down into the mines and having to deal with him. As far as the gore, you might be disapointed. It had some realistic looking human 'hearts' but they barely showed much of the killings. Also had some inventive killings, at least one.
This whole thing was funny and had some scary parts in it. Its basically one big joke but entertaining to watch. Its like a so bad its good movie. I liked the end too. I recomended this to horror fans.
Yes it was cheesy, some of it was cliche but i liked it.
Movie Review: Pretty decent horror outing, definitely best holiday-themed. Summary: 3 Stars
This movie is, admittedly, another cash-in on the holiday-themed horror spate of films in the early '80s. But it's the best of the unsavory lot, thanks to a dark, foreboding mine used in the final third where an equally creepy miner in full garb stalks and kills them. Let's forget that the "kids" are all in their early-to-mid 20's, most can't act worth beans, the love triangle aspect is boring as hell, and the main hero of the film breaks into accent (sounds Irish). And forget that the effects are sometimes laughable (is human blood really doghnut filling?) It's creepy fun, and even though the film was badly edited (damn you Paramount!) it still has memorably icky scenes, like Mabel in the dryer (a scene ripped off to this day) and the obligatory hearts in the candy boxes that drip onto the tables they're laid on. The DVD by Paramount is clear but needs extras badly! If it's ever rereleased with a trailer and unedited I'm first in line to buy it! Good horror from the good ol' days of the genre.
