Movie Review: At last, a BLOODY GOOD TIME! NEVER been HAPPIER to DOUBLE DIP!!
Summary: 5 Stars
Horror fans rejoice! This is the new and TRUE version of a film that, for so long, has deserved this sort of cinematic justice! Usually I'm grinding my teeth at yet another remaster/re-issue/re-purchase. We've all been used and abused for years now. But no such frustration in this case. This is what we WANt to buy! And the complete opposite of what we usually get.
Here's a reason to run, not walk, to plunk down the cash. Finally, we have a release that absolutely & completely brings violent JUSTICE to a great little golden age horror flick, that from the outset, had it's very "heart" ripped out by the self righteous, paranoid, pick-axing MPAA.
I happen to be one of the original fans, who bought a theater ticket at age 15. The film's had a special place in my scareflick loving heart ever since. Sadly, as similarly reported throughout this page, the movie has only been "experienced" in terribly edited-neutered-butchered-pickaxed fashion since the time of it's release, & all through the "video store" years. All fixed now! I've never been more pleased about a re-release/re-purchase. This is now the ONLY version of MY BLOODY VALENTINE, and it renders the previous hacked up theatrical version useless and laughable.
Our experience watching this beloved film in it's original form, was something totally NEW, exciting and extremely rewarding! I literally found myself APPLAUDING and CHEERING, during and after every memorable HARRY WARDEN kill scene, because each & every one is now taken to it's rightful effective finish... and more! The old censored theatrical version is one of the very finest examples of how the MPAA could NEUTER and literally RUIN some of the best and coolest b-films of our time!
Usually deleted scenes don't add up to much. Here, they are just EVERYTHING! Now, the film experience is taken to it's ultimate level because all those important deleted/extended moments are integrated into the movie, and it makes each great scene finish 20 times better! "POOR MABEL AT THE LAUNDROMAT," "THE GIRL HUNG ON THE SHOWER HEAD" "FLASHBACK-HEART-RIPPING," "SURPRISING PICKAXE TO THE GUT OF A CASTMEMBER WE CARE ABOUT" All wayyyyyyy more effective and stunning. The grand result of these powerful finishes to the scenes, is that it makes everything that happens AFTER seem much more unsettling, creepy and dangerous!!
The film doesn't hold back now, and the payoff is visceral and fantastic!
Only a real fan of this film will know what an incredible difference this has made! I've now seen the REAL "MY BLOODY VALENTINE" for the first time! Trust me horror fans (& I mean original 70s/early 80s horror fans who "get" all this), if you haven't bought this DVD yet, or have understandably shrugged your shoulders and walked away from this release, thinking it's just another cheap cash-in, take these words to *heart:
Buy it once, watch it twice... when you see it THIS way, you'll scream it thrice! IT'S THE BEST & MOST IMPORTANT HORROR DVD RELEASE OF THE YEAR!
REMOVING what's now been RESTORED into this movie, is like taking the punch lines out of a comedy, the tears out of a drama, or the T&A out of a nudie show. let's be honest, it's a very important part of the fun!
A film like this truly needs these impactful endings to create the feeling of danger, true fear and maybe most importantly, fun! With the director's original & viscerally bloody vision in tact, the experience is now palpable, frightening and applause worthy. Something great has happened for one of the most beloved & shamefully underrated horror/slasher films of the late 70s early 80s.
And I guess we have another stupid remake to thank for this very important DVD release. Without the new 3D remake nonsense coming out, I'm certain this wouldn't have happened. Bottom line and all that...
I guess i could put up with any of these frightless, superficial and mostly useless remakes if it means the ORIGINAL would be treated so well. DOWN IN THAT COALMINE... SOMEWHERE, HARRY WARDEN is BREATHING... A VERY DEEP SIGH OF RELIEF!
*One side note with this release. The transfer is excellent, the sound authentic and effective. BUT we would appreciate the original trailer!
Seriously, the trailer is the thermos to the DVD lunchbox.
the DVD presentation of films such as these, truly benefits from those great original TV spots and trailers!
Commentary from the director would've been great too, because of everything mentioned aboved
But again, just FINALLY being able to experience this movie the right way
is what's got us doing bloody cartwheels.
Hopefully this release will be the inspiration
for other films that were previously butchered or tainted in some manner
(Happy Birthday To Me comes to mind)
Or howabout some of the still frustratingly OOP flicks like CURTAINS, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, THE BOOGENS, THE MEDUSA TOUCH, BAD RONALD
or DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW (just to name a few)
Until then, we at least have the excellent and nostalgic MY BLOODY VALENTINE
finally, in it's complete and stunningly effective original form!
HOO-f******-RAY for HARRY WARDEN!!!
Maybe now, rightfully, this great scary character will finally stand as one of the truly grisly & terrifying
horror icons of our time. The Scooby Doo moment doesn't matter. It's about the ominous image of that miner's get up and the violent psyche within. Add that all these terrifyingly gruesome kills,
are finally taken to their rightful and highly disturbing end, and you've got an awesome horror combination! Now a new generation of viewers can expereince a MUCH higher level of frightful
entertainment.
Until this point, Harry Warden had been sedated and made to look violently impotent by the MPAA
Not anymore! Thank you, Lionsgate!
