Movie Reviews of My Bloody ValentineMovie Review: Happy Valentine's Day Summary: 5 StarsAhhh, the early `80s. It was a wonderful time if you were a horror movie junkie like me. After "Halloween" and "Friday the 13th", you had a string of masked killer slasher movies that were, if not exactly Oscar worthy, they were good escapist entertainment. "My Bloody Valentine" was a gory, nasty little thriller about Valentine Bluffs, a community that hasn't had a Valentines Day dance in 20 years, after a mine accident and some subsequent murders. Now the town elders are trying to put the past behind them, but as V-Day approaches, new murders and warnings start popping up everywhere. The kids decide to hold the dance/party in the old mine (the town's biggest employer), but a figure in a miner's outfit and breathing mask appears with his pick-ax to murder the happy go lucky kids.
OK, so this is the plot of all those movies back then, but who cares. It works now better than it did back in 1981, mostly for the nostalgia effect. "My Bloody Valentine" is one of the better "Halloween" knock-offs because it takes its material pretty seriously (believe it or not). I lived through the horror hay day back then and I love revisiting these old movies. They remind me of when the only thing I had to be afraid of was that shadow that seems to move on its own (I was pretty young back then).
The mines that are the towns main fixture is a really creepy place, the narrow, cold and cramped shafts induce a fear of cave-ins, which is a natural fear of mans since the dawn of time. Throw in a masked serial killer and it works pretty well. The killer's identity at the end is the only let down, but I guess they were trying to leave the possibility of a sequel open. The acting was not the best, but the cast did a good job of at least not embarrassing themselves.
If you like the `80s Golden Age of horror movies, then you have probably already seen "My Bloody Valentine". For those who are going through the current regurgitation (the pale imitation of our glory period) then you owe it to yourself to check these movies out.
Summary of My Bloody ValentineThis bizarre little horror movie is set in the mining town of Valentine Bluffs, which may be in Canada, though the odd, indeterminate accents of the cast are perhaps meant to suggest that it is truly a regionless everyland. In a cruel twist of fate, the Bluffers have not celebrated Valentine's Day in 20 years due to a terrible mining accident. This year is to be the first return of the Valentine's Dance--repeatedly described by adults as the biggest event of the year--but someone (or something?) is trying to put a stop to the fun by delivering heart-shaped candy boxes with real hearts in them. The dance is called off in the name of public safety, the young (well, youngish) people decide to hold a party inside the mine instead, and if you think we're getting out of this one without someone getting a pickax through the chest, you have no business watching slasher movies. --Ali Davis
