Movie Reviews of My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Movie Review: A review from a Greek guy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was born and raised in Greece but now live in the U.S.
The movie was funny as hell. Dont believe other reviews that say that Greeks did not like the movie. On the contrary. The movie was an even bigger hit in Greece and everybody loved it.

True, the stereotypes are overstretched and not completely accurate: Greeks dont use WINDEX as a general purpose medicine -I dont know where that came from - and also Greeks strive for their childrens education (male or female). For example in Greece college students almost never support themselves but are rather fed by their parents until they finish their studies and find a job (in contrast to the U.S. college students that are mostly independent).

But all these exaggerations dint bother me at all. The movie actually helped me realise that things and gestures that Greeks use to do , actualy seem very strange to people of different culture: Take for example the spitting in the head that is supposed to spell away the evil. Thats 100% a Greek gesture that only after seeing the movie I rationalized the fact of how "crazy" it looks. Or the consumption of all parts of a lamb -brain,tongue,eyes,intestines,testicles- that may look completely gross to Americans, are actually considered delicatessen in Greece.

So overall a very very funny movie that Greeks actually enjoy and dont care about the stereotyping.

Hey, when was the last time that Greeks have even been mentioned in a Holywood film ?

Movie Review: Big Fat laughs all the way through
Summary: 5 Stars

Having lived among Greeks for years, both in Greece and here in the U.S., I can say that this movie really hits the target in portraying life among a close extended Greek (or indeed, any ethnic) family.
Even though the central character is Toula, the young woman getting married, her father, Windex bottle in hand, literally steals the show. (I can't help but wonder how much the company who makes Windex paid for this product placement)As irrational and dogmatic as he is, it's clear that he only wants what's best for his children and for them to be happy (and he never lets them forget that, either)
Admittedly, I loved this movie because it could have been a replay of my own marriage, except I was the only child from an uptight WASPy family and my husband was the Greek with all the boistrous relatives who weren't sure whether they approved of him marrying a xeni [foreigner]. Even if this was not the case, I would still say it is a great movie, full of lovable characters, well paced action and priceless moments. My personal favorites were when the young man's strait-laced parents first visited the Portokalos home and had just a tad too much ouzo and later, when Toula's brother decided to teach Ian some essential Greek phrases.
Gus Portokalos was on to something when he said that in the world there are Greeks and those who wish they were Greek. After seeing this movie, you will be either one or the other.

Movie Review: My Big Fat Greek Smile!
Summary: 5 Stars

Foreige films I was never a fan of and I thought that the comendy smash My Big Fat Greek Wedding was one of them but yet I was interested in veiwing this film. When I did see the movie I was sad that it wasn't a foreige film but I enjoyed it to the fullest.

The kind of family that is in the film is probally the type of family that you see in just about every movie about dyfuntional families. The movie is a great movie that I laughed out loud countless times. They didn't need to add anything eles in the movie to make it good. The lenght of time for this kind of movie went perfect for the plot and everything that happened in it.This doesn't happen very often.

The acting in the movie was excellant.I've only seen John Corbett in one of his previous films Serendipity and all of the other actors and actresses were new to me.Buty they were all wonderful for the first time.

The movie is simply about a Greek girl in a very very very Greek family. Her family always goes to tradition.Toula is the girls name and her father owns a resturant named Dancing Zorbas. One day a man walks in to the resturant with his friend and Toula makes a fool out of herself in front of him.She gets a job at a travel agency and the guy comes back and they go out.The trouble comes when he proposes and she accepts.Everything is fine except.....he's not Greek.

So see My Big Fat Greek Wedding. This DVD will be in my DVD libary.

ENJOY!

Movie Review: A Big Fat Wonderful Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

If it is true what Leo Tolstoy said, "All happy families are alike, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way," then its also true that most ethnic groups are both vey different and also very similar. One only has to view My Big Fat Greek Wedding and see Lainie Kazan and Michael Constantine as Greek parents, to realize this plot could have been made about Jewish, Italtian or even Indian parents wishing their daughter to marry one of their own. Yes, the movie is stereotypical - the family party while a pig is roasted on the front lawn attests to this - but it should also be said that it is a laugh out loud funny and feel good movie too.

Toula, played by Nia Vardalos, who wrote the movie and is Greek herself,is an unattached woman who works in her father's diner. She isn't all that attractive and seems rather resigned to her fate as an umarried woman. And it doesn't help at all when Toula's father keeps telling her, "You look so old," while other family members wonder if she will ever meet and marry a nice Greek man. Taking matters into her own hands, Toula turns from an awkward duckling to a swan, attends college and begins working for a family member's travel agency. Enter Ian Miller, played by John Corbett, with the requisite WASP, parents and watch Greek magic happen.

I highly recommend this movie. It was so good I did the Miserlou out of the theater.

Movie Review: Sweet Home Greece
Summary: 5 Stars

This wonderful romantic comedy about a woman's hilarious struggle to find her identity and one true love--while trying to deal with her crazy Greek family--was written by, and stars Nia Vardalos (Meet Prince Charming, Men Seeking Women), adapted from her one woman play. Thirty years old and unmarried, Toula Portokalos (Vardalos) is the biggest concern of her traditional Greek family. Toula knows there is more to life than marrying a Greek man, having Greek babies, and making Greek food, so she enrolls in a college computer course, and improves her appearance. She attracts the attention of a high school teacher, Ian Miller (John Corbett of Sex and the City)--a vegetarian who isn't Greek. Toula tries to keep their relationship a secret, especially from her overprotective father, but her extended family ultimately finds out. When Ian proposes, Toula accepts, and the whole family is thrown into utter chaos. This leads to many hilarious complications and a sweet, touching finale. What makes My Big Fat Greek Wedding so special is that almost anyone can relate to the situations and the characters, which just adds to the film's charm. It is a wonderfully written, beautifully acted, and touchingly real film. Of course all the hype is a bit much and its tremendous success a bit shocking, but I can't say this film doesn't deserve it. Truly wonderful!!!
