Movie Reviews of Mutiny on the BountyMovie Review: I'd hate being in THIS Navy Summary: 5 Stars
What more can I say about this classic film? It is simply one of the best sea epics and even more so because it's relatively factual about a brutal sea captain of the British Navy. The acting, direction, art direction are all excellent. While mutiny is usually not a good thing, the true story guides the viewer to understand why Mr. Christian felt that he had no choice. And for this choice, he and his crew were punished, not by the courts, but by themselves in a self imposed marooning in a desolate island. The film makes us feel the agony of land lovers being pressed into service on a naval ship and abused by a cruel and dishonest captain, until good men reached their breaking point.
Movie Review: Drama on the High Seas Summary: 5 Stars
Clark Gable and Charles Laughton set the screen on fire with conflict. Laughton commands the bounty as an implacable tyrant, Gable is the compasionate second in command. A true story originaly researched and written by two word war I flying aces, the movie follows the written story almost exactly. These mythic characters changed the face of the modern Navy not only in england, but the world. The DVD also includes a Movie Tone news story on "modern day" Pitcairn Island. This movie is a must own.
Movie Review: Wonderful movie, great acting, historically inaccurate! Summary: 5 Stars
Bligh's name has entered the English language as a synonym for cruelty. In reality he flogged his men less than did most of the British captains in the South Pacific in the 1800's. Bligh served under Captain Cook and continued Cook's humane reforms for the sailors (better food and sanitation, etc). For a more balanced view of Bligh and Fletcher Christian, read MR. BLIGH'S BAD LANGUAGE. In the meantime, myth outlives history. I still love this movie!
Movie Review: The definitive version Summary: 5 Stars
Skip the 1962-version with Brando or the 1984-effort with Mel Gibson...THIS is the 1. The production values are very high(of course - it`s from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) and the star performances still survives... With MGM`s "San Francisco", the best b&w melodrama of the 30s... No wonder they called Clark Gable "The King of Hollywood" - here the monarch is at his youthful and masculine BEST:-)
Movie Review: Good Quality DVD of classic adventure! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, so there are some corny MGM movie moments here and there, but on the whole this is a timeless adventure classic with standout performances by Laughton, Gable and Tone. Truly thrilling and gut wrenching, deserving of a place in your collection. A few additional bonus features compliment this Best Picture Oscar winner.
