Movie Reviews of Muppets From Space

Movie Review: Even this vegan mom thinks it's a hoot
Summary: 5 Stars

I grew up watching "The Muppet Show" weekly, so I rushed out to watch "Muppets from Space" when it was released in 1999. (I think I saw it at the local drive-in.) This New Year's Eve, we decided to have a family movie marathon but forgot to prepare for it. Rather than watch our old DVDs, we hooked a laptop to the TV and streamed this movie from one of the DVD-rental sites.

Set to funk music, this family flick follows Gonzo's quest to figure out who he is and find his long-lost family -- providing an opportunity for parents and veg kids to discuss what it's like to be different. A few of the snappy one-liners will also spark discussion, if you catch them. Is it funny to call Miss Piggy "bacon," you might ask. And what does Gonzo mean when he jokes about his species going extinct?

The movie contains a few references to/ depictions of meat. When the stove breaks, for example, the Muppets are served bologna for breakfast, a food that all but Rizzo (the rat) refuse. Still, there's nothing in this movie that's offensive enough for me to forgo the sheer fun of watching it.

Movie Review: The most fun muppet movie yet...
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this when it came out in the theater (afternoon showing) and it was packed with kids. There was plenty for the kids and adults to enjoy, although it seemed to be at different points. My girlfriend and I could hardly stay in our seats from laughing so hard. To those that say there is not a positive message in this compared to other (read: older) Henson films, I have to disagree. Some complain that there are not musical numbers - those were the parts that I could do without as a kid, and even moreso as an adult. My sister and her daughter both loved this movie. I consider this to be better that many of the muppet movies out there (definitely better than Treasure Island). The only part I would change in this movie is Hulk Hogan's (thankfully brief) completely over the top cameo.
Relax, kick up the Home Theater a knotch and let the good times (and good music) roll!

Movie Review: Meet the Gang of "Muppets Tonight"
Summary: 5 Stars

As a devoted fan of both the original Muppet Show (no quotes necessary -- it's not just a series, it's a concept) and the short lived revival "Muppets Tonight" I must say that I think that "Muppets from Space" is the best Muppet movie since the original ("The Muppet Movie"). Not only does it feature classic Jim Henson muppets such as Kermit, Piggy and Gonzo, it also "introduces" some of Brian Henson (and company)'s new Muppets, such as Clifford the rastafarian catfish, Dr. Phil Van Neuter and my personal favorite, Pepe the prawn (I think he's from down on the bayou, ok?). The film's only lack is the relative abscence of Muppet songs from both movie and soundtrack. It's good, I promise.

Movie Review: MUPPETS!- and a nice use of DVD technology.
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved the movie, but I bought this for the DVD extras. I like it when DVDs do something that could only be presented on that format, and this movie's "live video commentary" fufills that. It brings up a little row of theater seats, MST3K style, and the director and various Muppets comment on the film. Just as funny by itself- like 2 movies in one! Plus some funny outtakes, a music video, and other stuff. A good, low-cost DVD, and a fun movie, great for little kids.

Movie Review: Muppets rock!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is a no-questions, hands-down five star effort. The hilarious script, brilliant soundtrack, and always-lovable muppet characters combine for an experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all my household (ages 2 through 36) and more than a few of my friends. The script is fresher and funnier than some of the previous muppet offerings, and for me, has stood up to seven or eight viewings, both with and without the kids. You should definitely watch this one!
