Movie Reviews of Mulan IIMovie Review: Charming, Romantic Sequel with a neat 'FastPlay' feature Summary: 5 Stars
I found Mulan II to be a very cute, very engaging movie, and a very pleasing DVD. For fans of Disney, the animation process, and fans of the Mulan story, this DVD is an instant add to your collection.
The story springs directly from the first movie. Mulan and Shang are about to get married when the emperor gives them a special mission -- take 3 princesses into enemy territory for an arranged marriage. There's a hitch, of course, and what ensues is charmingly romantic, funny at times, and a real heart warming story. I found the opening sequence a bit hokey, but once the story got rolling, I was really into it. I loved the 3 princesses and thought they were absolutely adorable. A definite feel-good movie with a lot of romance in the storyline.
The extras are short, but I liked them a lot. There are two deleted scenes, both in storyboard form and sound only, as they never made it to the animators. One is of Princess Mei flirting with one of the guardsmen, and the production team explains why they removed it from the story. The other scene was a rather long action sequence between Mulan and Shang, on a covert mission to retrieve a scroll. I thought it was fascinating to see the process and the decisions they made, and liked this part very much.
Also included were a few clips of the actors behind the voices -- and I was disappointed to see that Eddie Murphy was not back as Mushu. The actor that did his voice this time, though, was spot on, and I couldn't tell the difference. He truly did a great job.
The rest of the extras (World of Mulan, the music video) were also interesting to watch. Oh, and the Mushu game was very cute!
One of the best things I liked about this DVD was the child-friendly FastPlay feature. This is the first DVD I've bought which includes this, and I like it a lot! As soon as the movie is popped into the DVD player, it starts. No skipping around the menu or trying to figure out which button on the control does what (very handy for little fingers that know how to put the dvd in, but not how to work the remote). After the movie is finished, the extras begin to automatically play. I thought this was genius!
Overall, I found this DVD to be a wonderful purchase. Disney has done a great job again, making an interesting, entertaining movie, and making the DVD itself well worth the money.
Movie Review: Come on folks, this is a CHILDRENS movie Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, I've read the other reviews and what I want to say is this.... ' Come on people, this is for a children's movie!" If you think about it and have seen most of Disney's movies based on other people's books you have to know that Disney does their own unique version of the book. So if you are looking for a real authenic Mulan movie, give it up, Disney doesn't do it that way. Same goes for the people who are picking apart "quality of the animation", again let me say this is a child's film and I personally it looked just as good as the 1st movie. I loved that 99% of the cast came back, except for Eddie Murphy. But I think they found someone who did a stand up job as far as matching Eddie's or shall I say Mushu's voice.
For those of us who grew up in the late 60's and 70's we've seen a lot of changes movie wise and can now see how movies where made for the children and not so much for the parents who where taking their children. Since Shrek and Finding Nemo just to name two movies that have multi-level jokes that the children don't get but the adults do and when the child wants to see the movie again, the parents don't mind, this is a new generation. With time comes newer technology and Disney not so wise decision not to stay with Pixar, as well some of the smaller details like hand drawn single cells are not even thought of as the norm any more. Time marches on and so does everything else around it.
I personally like the story and that Mulan is a strong female character. I like that she sticks by her man while Mushu is doing everything in his power to make Shang look clumsy, not such good luck around a fire, or on his horse. I do like that Mulan tells the girls to "Follow Your Heart". I think this is advice we all need to give and be given to in life. You have to follow your heart to be happy in your job, what you stand for & in your personal life, just to name a few of the places to really be happy in life you must follow your heart.
Is Mulan 2 predictable, yes BUT it's Disney and there is always a happy ending. If your child loved Mulan, I bet your child will love Mulan #2. I am not disappointed in this movie at all!
Movie Review: Your duty is to your heart Summary: 5 Stars
I found this sequel to be faithful to the heroic nature of the original Mulan. This is no cheap knock-off intended to ride on the popularity of the first movie. The high quality of animation is maintained (and fully up to Disney feature film standards), but more importantly, the quality of the story is up Disney standards.
This is tale that will hold the interest of both children and adults. Here is the appropriately Chinese theme of the seeming contradiction between adherence to duty, tradition, and family (Confucianism) and the path of intuition, heart, and nature (Taoism.) We are shown that there should be no fundamental conflict between the path of duty and the path of the heart. Indeed, our duty is to our heart. If we listen to our heart it will tell us what out true duty is- if it is really our true duty, then there should be no conflict.
All the old characters are back from the first film- including Eddie Murphy as the mischievous family guardian spirit, Mushu. In the "Voices of Mulan" feature you see that almost all of the main voice actors (except Murphy, of course) are Chinese or at least Asian. This is kind of ironic since they all have impeccable American accents...
It is nice to see films set in the legendary period of the Middle Kingdom before the coming of the Manchu. From many little details, it is obvious that the designers actually knew something of classical Chinese culture for a change. In any case, the entire film is a treat for the heart, the funny bone, and the eye.
Movie Review: This Is Really Good Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't expecting much, but I was impressed by this. Worthy to be shown in the theaters I think, too bad it went straight to video. I don't usually check out Disney sequels, but since I liked the first "Mulan" and it is a Chinese/American animated feature, a rarity, plus I'm in full support of having more Asian talent in Hollywood, I decided to buy it. Anyway, this is a very beautifully done movie, the animation is excellent and very pleasing to the eyes. The story not as grand as the first "Mulan" was still a really good movie. Mushu at first played by Eddie Murphy, now played by Mark Moseley was excellent. Actually I couldn't tell the difference, Mark Moseley sounded like Eddie Murphy. Ming-Na was excellent as Mulan, and everyone else returned with new voices like Lucy Liu and Michelle Kwan. I think people who are into animation and Asian culture would really enjoy this film.
Movie Review: awesome! Summary: 5 Stars
I practically worship Mulan. Ignore all of the dumb reviews
that say it's stupid, dumb, or a waste of money. I want
to answer the review that said, " Hope it will be good ".
Shang doesn't die.
I can memorize the songs and I even have a Mulan dress from
Build-A-Bear Workshop. It's awesome! I got it the day
it came out I was so excited!
In the movie, Mulan becomes a rolemodel for little girls
around China and teaches a Karate class. After a class,
Shang proposes to Mulan and she says yes! After a party
they get called to the emperor. He wants them to bring
Ting-Ting, Mei, and Su. They are his daughters and also
princesses. They take Ling, Chien Po, and Yao with them.
I won't ruin the rest!
