Movie Reviews of Mr. Nice GuyMovie Review: nice unlisted bonus feature Summary: 4 Stars
This film is a middling effort from Jackie Chan--it doesn't disappoint. It's not his best but far from his worst. That said, this disc is worth it for a couple of reasons: First, it is priced cheaply. Second, the Jackie Chan filmography feature contains clips from other films that you can view by clicking on them. These include a Rush Hour trailer and a scene from Rumble in the Bronx, but most notably, the *entire* ladder fight sequence from First Strike. Considering that the ladder fight is easily the best scene in First Strike, this to me was almost like getting both movies at once. For a low price you get one solid full-length film, as well as the standout fight sequence from another film which was otherwise less remarkable.
Movie Review: Could have been one of his greats. Summary: 4 Stars
Quite simply put, this could have landed itself in Chan's all-time greats (which include Drunken Master 2, Police Story, Project A, Crime Story, Operation Condor, Young Master, Miracles). The action is some of the best he's done in years with set-pieces that are sublime, including the fight on the horse-drawn carriage and the construction sight. What stops it from being a masterpiece? The performances. Jackie gives his usual solid performance, but seems to be surrounded by wooden and ham acting galore. Sadly some of the lines are unintentionally funny and detract from what is otherwise a top-notch Chan film. If you're reading this Jackie, please remake this film with different actors!
Movie Review: Worth it just to see Chan almost get buzzsawed. Summary: 4 Stars
This isn't Chan's best film, but he's made so many, that's not really saying anything. Nearly every film he's ever made is worth seeing if only to enjoy his acrobatic madness.
The plot for Mr. Nice Guy would fill a postage stamp, but who watches these for plot? They're always just a thinly veiled excuse for some brilliant action sequences. And this movie is full of them. They're not exceptionally creative by Chan's standards, but they're still lovingly executed and a joy to behold. I just wish there was one last fight instead of the dumptruck ending, though it is kind of cool to watch stuff getting crushed.
Movie Review: Not bad but could have been better Summary: 4 Stars
This movie was a decent Jackie Chan film but with all of the bad actors it made it uneasy to watch. Also the American version has been butchered with a few scenes deleted and some moved around. The bad thing about New Line's version is that they took out the theme song at the end with Jackie singing it. If you can get your hands on a Golden Harvest imported version then get it cause it's a lot better than the New Line U.S. release. If you want to get one of the newer Chan flicks then go with "Who Am I?" because it's much better than this one.
