Movie Reviews of Mr. Baseball

Movie Review: A comedy with a drama inside.
Summary: 4 Stars

I remember seeing this in the theaters when it came out, Tom Selleck was riding the wave of success that three men and a baby, and trying to solidify himself in the movies, he took this roll in Mr. Baseball. Selleck plays an arrogant american baseball star who is in a prolonged slump in his carreer, facing retirement or trade, he chooses trade. Little did he know the trade would be far beyond a transfer from the east coast to the west coast...how about across the pacific. He ends up in Japan playing in the japaneese league. Being stubborn in his Superstar ways, he doesn't want to change his way to "be a team player". Selleck actually does a great job at playing a jerk, disrespectful to his new team and even to the culture. Well, as any superstar with a big head and small brain, he starts chasing this Beutiful japaneese businesswoman that works for the team in advertising/promotion. Little does he know that she's the Manager's daughter. Will the star change his ways, will he fail because of ego? Great story, entertaining and some funny parts, but goal is to show and build respect for other cultures and be more open. It reminds me of a movie a few years earlier, Gung Ho. Yes, the movie does somewhat feel dated now, showing the stereotypical japaneese culture and preaching a message of openess, coming from a time in the 80's when Japan-US relations were lower because of the resessions and Japaneese movement of business into our country, Like the closing of american automotive plants and opening of the toyota and honda factories in the us. This film was meant to be a booster for starting to heal a wound that had really developed. The message is universal and timeless, just be open, and show respect to other cultures, and you might learn something. Enjoyable, now on DVD.

Movie Review: funny look at life for an american in Japan
Summary: 4 Stars

Mr. Baseball

Engaging film that tells it like it is about life in Japan for a visiting geijin (foreigner). Whether its navigating a bathroom for the first time to enjoying the wonders of Kobe beef or looking at the abject horror in the faces of your girlfriends parents the first time you meet them. Mr. Baseball hits a homerun. Its also an entertaining movie, arrogant (yet ever ingratiating) Selleck plays an over the hill baseball player shipped off to Japan by his agent. With the help of his new manager and the new girlfriend he meets, he learns how to grow up and fit in, but it isn't an easy learning experience.

While not academy material, this movie holds its own and your attention through out and is full of laughs as well as insight, certainly more then I expected when I picked this one up.

No extras on the DVD other then subtitles.

Enjoy, have a laugh and if you ever lived in Japan, enjoy the memories of that unique experience as they come flooding back.

Movie Review: A Favourite
Summary: 4 Stars

Tom Selleck plays a spoiled, womanizing, washed-up Major League ball player who gets traded to a team in Japan. After a few temper tantrums and childish pranks he realizes that he needs to do more than coast along if his career in baseball is going to survive.

With the help of the coach (Ken Takakura), the coach's lovely daughter and his assigned interpreter he learns to respect the traditions of Japan and its people. He also learns that what you put in is what you get back. In learning he is able to teach the coach and his fellow players to enjoy the "game" of baseball.

This is ONE of my favourite baseball movies. It's witty and light entertainment that offers a glimpse into Japanese culture and the business of baseball. Selleck is believable as a baseball giant. Reviewed by M. E. Wood.

Movie Review: Not a bad movie at all
Summary: 4 Stars

Although I prefer "Gung Ho" starring Michael Keaton as a good way to showcase the difference between Japanese and American culture, I found "Mr. Baseball" to be almost as good. Americans tend to think their culture is so superior to everyone else on the planet, but there is plenty in Japanese culture to admire and emulate, not the least of which is a willingness to show politeness to others. The character that Tom Selleck plays finally humbles himself and does things their way and comes to appreciate the culture for what it is.

Movie Review: AN EXCELLENT BASEBALL COMEDY
Summary: 4 Stars

Even though it was not a major hit, "Mr. Baseball" is one of the better baseball comedies, and, most assuredly, Tom Sellick's best film to date. It about baseball, but more about clashing cultures, and the movie is well acted and directed. Ken Takakura is especially fine as the Japanese team's manager. Dennis Haysbert is also excellent in his role as a journeyman American player. Much better than "Bull Durham", which has been wildly overrrated over time.
