Movie Reviews of Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro

Movie Review: Extraordinary, Miraculous, Astounding; although my intention was different
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this DVD performance of the Marriage of Figaro for a totally different reason. In the description page the language listed was English, causing me to understand that this might be SUNG IN ENGLISH. I therefore ordered it with this objective in mind, to have a performance of this Opera Buffa sung in English (very few performances in English exist, and it seems that none was captured on DVD). Any way, it turns out that the information page on Amazon describing the language as English is in error. Yes, there are subtitles in English too, but it is not sung in English. However, since it arrived I decided to check whether the exceptionally Good reviews are indeed correct. ... and what can I say but: YES, they are more than correct. This was one of the best experiences I had in watching and listening to Opera. The cast not only that they sung and played Mozart they felt him being on stage with them. It is a miraculous performance, truly astounding. Despite the high price I strongly recommend this DVD to any Opera lover.

Movie Review: New Nozze
Summary: 5 Stars

A wonderful performance, imaginatively staged (which is far from always true in this day of Eurotrash, or even of Covent Garden, as witness the ridiculously staged Falstaff they put out a few years ago with the splendid Bryn Terfel). Why it was necessary to move Figaro's action from the late 18th century to the early 19th, I don't quite know, but it does the piece no harm. Figaro, the Count, Cherubino and particularly Susanna (Miah Persson, the center of the opera, virtually always in control) are all terrific, and the Countess just a tiny notch below them. The only egregious piece of miscasting is Barbarina, who's both visibly older and larger than her paramour, but her role is pretty small, after all. David McVicar, the producer, pays tribute in his notes to Nicholas Till's wonderful book, Mozart and the Enlightenment, which conceives of this opera in terms the far transcend the usual conception of an Upstairs-Downstairs piece of class warfare.

Movie Review: Oh, wow. wowowowow.

At the risk of betraying my beloved Sir Thomas Allen, Gerald Finley may be my new favourite Count, in terms of the whole performance and not just the singing. I've never seen anyone give the Count that kind of emotional life. In Crudel perche finora, all this vulnerability turns to joy when he thinks he has her, and he's so giddy in the next recit, like his whole emotional worth is now happy and light and flirty... my heart almost breaks for him in hai gavinta la causa!
And the gag when he discovers Cherubino is CLASSIC. Instead of rage, it's "f my life". LOVE LOVE LOVE him!

Too bad Erwin Schrott is in this... he just stares at the conductor and looks brooding. meh.

LOVE this dvd!

Movie Review: The Best NOZZE DI FIGARO on dvd
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a half dozen dvds of this operatic masterpiece, and this one is, hands down, my favorite. McVicar's production is flawless, and the singers all give fully committed performances here. Not only do they act superbly, but they can all sing! Le nozze di Figaro is a funny and at the same time deeply moving and even disturbing opera, and you will experience all of that here. Without question this dvd is one of my very, very favorites in my entire collection, which probably consists of over 200 operas on dvd. I only wish I could give this more than five stars!

Movie Review: One engaging engagement!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This production is absolutely delightful one of the best ones ever staged, IMHO. (Folks, note that the 1 star review is based on an Amazon description mix up and has no relevance to the actual performance!). I saw it shown on the HDTV and had to own it of course. This is a splurge to be enjoyed time and again - supreb singing and engaging acting bring this beloved opera to a new level. No wonder La Netrebko found Schrott so irresistable. :)
