Movie Reviews of Move Over DarlingMovie Review: Romantic Comedy Summary: 4 Stars
The original film in 1911 was titled "Enoch Arden" and was inspired by the poem of the same name by Alfred Lord Tennyson. In 1940 the movie "My Favorite Wife" was made. It, like this re-make is a comic inversion of Enoch Arden poem and movie. In this 1960's remake a man who is ready to have his missing wife declared legally dead and remarry finds himself in a predicament when his first wife turns up after five years of being gone!
This remake turned out to be a hit right when 20th Century FOX studios had to have income. There is no question Doris Day made this remake so popular. She is the girl next door who brings her own innocent charm and comic skill to a movie the whole family can watch. The digital remastering of the original master makes the movie quality look better then it did when originally released. The DVD also has behind-the-scenes filmmaking documentary, a Marilyn vs. Doris featurette, a welcome chat with Polly Bergen and Part II of D. W. Griffith silent drama, ENOCH ARDEN (1911). This is an enjoyable DVD.
Movie Review: Delightful Day in winning comedy! Summary: 4 Stars
This 1963 release is one of the best of the Doris Day situation comedy features, which proliferated during the 1960s. This one is based upon the old story about a long-lost wife turning up after being presumed dead, just in time to coincide with her husband's second marriage. Played for lots of physical comedy, "Move Over Darling" is bright, fast, funny and extremely well cast. Day is, as always, a delight. Utterly believable in even the nost outrageous situations, she holds the screen with her common sense sunniness. James Garner was one her best co-stars (their pairing in "The Thill of It All" is a delight as well), Thelma Ritter is in her element as Garner's confused mother - her dry delivery cannot be equaled -and Polly Bergen shows her stuff as an actress here, really standing up to all the star power around her. Add Chuck Conners, the delightful Don Knotts, and an hysterical turn by Edgar Buchanan as a disgruntled judge, throw in a great car-wash escapade and sparkling 1960s designs - you've got a period piece that still delights.
Movie Review: James Garner trumps anything you could ever be. Summary: 4 Stars
Who knew that James Garner was as good, if not better, than Rock Hudson? We did. We watchers of Maverick, Marlowe, Nichols, Rockford Files.
And here, in the midst of a romantic comedy, Garner finds room to take care of a woman who was his supposedly deceased wife, and he loves her with no loss of care and passion, if mixed with a little surprise.
If there is room in this movie for a bit of mid-century American confusion as sexual roles shifted and morphed, Garner did not cop out and look for a safe new-world harbor; he hung in and tried to hold onto the certainty that a wife would want to cling to.
And that, in the timeframe of this movie, is what happy endings look like. And good for them. And bad for us, for no longer having any underpinnings.
Movie Review: Doris was good!...But...Marilyn would have been great!!! Summary: 4 Stars
"Move Over Darling" a good movie to have for your collection, I had enjoyed it with Doris Day. But prior to filming of this movie, it was being film under another title "Something Got to Give" starring the one and only (I mean that literally) Ms. Marilyn Monroe. The whole time watching this flix, I could not get Marilyn out of my mind and kept saying to myself Marilyn would have been so awesome for this role. I am a devoted fan of Ms. Day and I am, exceedingly, a devoted fan of Ms. Monroe. It was a little depressing to me, especially at the end of the movie, visioning Marilyn Monroe playing the role, wishing that it was her. Love you Marilyn!!!
Movie Review: Irene Dunne FAN!*! Summary: 4 Stars
While I am a devoted fan of both Irene Dunne & Cary Grant, I must admit that I did very much enjoy "Move Over Darling" w/ Day & Garner. Doris Day's expressive eyes are a joy to watch. She is perfectly cast in this role of the 1st wife. The whole film was great... up until the end. The road chase scene, through the car wash, etc. were all over the top. They could've skipped those last few scenes & jumped right in the pool w/ the family. That was my only disappointment with the film. I rated only 4 stars due to the last few extremely silly scenes; otherwise it would've been a 5. Still worth watching however.
