Movie Reviews of Moulin RougeMovie Review: Stunning DVD transfer! Summary: 5 Stars
How nice it feels to be 100% satisfied with a MGM release! (I'm still close to tears when I think of the horrible treatment they gave Garland's "I Could Go on Singing" recently!) This is certainly one of the best three strip Technicolor transfers available on DVD. The image quality is absolutely gorgeous from start to finish! I find it hard to believe that this haunting work of art looked any better when it was initially shown in first class cinemas way back in 1952. I've seen Mr. Huston's film maybe 50 times over the years, but never in my wildest dreams could I ever imagine that it was possible to restore it into something as beautiful as this DVD. A loud BRAVO to MGM!
Movie Review: Moulin Rouge Summary: 5 Stars
A box-office smash in 1952, John Huston's engrossing biopic about the discordant life and loves of famed 19th-century painter Toulouse-Lautrec is drenched in colors taken from the artist's own palette. Shot mostly from the waist up, but acting on his knees, José Ferrer does a remarkable job of conveying the gloomy Toulouse-Lautrec, whose infirmity crippled his self-esteem but instigated his flagrant art. Zsa Zsa Gabor, as entertainer Jane Avril, is captivating, while composer Georges Auric's now-classic score gives "Rouge" a melancholy cast. The flamboyant opening sequence is one of Huston's finest set pieces.
Movie Review: The Only Mouliln Rouge Summary: 5 Stars
I just returned from the Lautrec exhibit at the Art Institue of Chicago. I was able to purchase the DVD of the "original" Moulin Rouge with Jose Ferrer.
After having seen the original drawings the movie only served to bring home what a truly gifted artist Lautrec was.
It is a wonderful film, glorious in color, dancing and spectacle.
Don't short change yourself by watching Nicole Kidman. Opt for this original film.
Movie Review: DVD BREATHTAKING! Summary: 5 Stars
John Huston's MOULIN ROUGE is one of the truly great examples of the Technicolor process being used at its very best -- and I'm pleased to report that the DVD issue of this film is flawless. The Technicolor look of this film takes your breath away! And Jose Ferrer's performance is one the two or three finest of his career. This film takes its place along side LUST FOR LIFE as one of the finest film adaptations of an artist's life. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Movie Review: movies worth owning Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great biography of a truly gifted artist. It brings Paris to life in both its grand side and its seamy side. It is a pg movie with a lot of information about laTrec and also the times and the reasons for his art and his death. If you like Jose Ferrer, it is one of the two greatest movies in which he ever starred. His other great movie is "Cyrano de Bergerac."
