Movie Reviews of Mostly MarthaMovie Review: The Best Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is one of the best that I have ever watched. I have seen it maybe 25 times... I don't seem to tire of it. It has almost everything you could want in a movie - tension, love, sweetness, hope, loss... everything.
The actors are marvelous - they are not perfect looking people - that makes it even better. The scenes with the therapist are wonderful. The small niece is very believable.
The American movie version RESERVATIONS with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart is awful compared to this original. There is no real feeling in it, nor does it make much sense. Please see this one! You will in no way be disappointed. I have recommended it to everyone I know!
Movie Review: Beautiful film, but fire the translators Summary: 5 Stars
This film was wonderfully done. Moving, beautifully shot and acted, the story was thoroughly enjoyed, but the DVD has a serious flaw for those unable to follow german dialog. The English subtitling often fails. It isn't merely a problem of words lost in translation, but the entire translation going missing. Frequently, lines and lines of major dialog went by with absolutely no translation ever appearing as subtitles. Sprechen Sie keine Deutsch und vielen interessantes weissen sie nicht! Thankfully we could make out most of the untranslated dialog, but the authoring effort for the subtitles was well subpar. I'd still recommend the film, but more is lost than usual in translation.
Movie Review: Oh Martha Summary: 5 Stars
This film was wonderful. It was a quiet and calm feature. The filming was done in such a way that I really felt as if I was standing in Martha's kitchen. Martha is a slightly obsessive head chef and in her own right is quite happy with her life. Things get upset when her neice becomes her responsibility over night. Martha meets her match in a pretentious Italian chef and she fights tooth and nail for her career. This movie made me smile and soothed me. Often foreign films are full of snobbery but this movie was controlled in it's attitude and made for an excellent film.
Movie Review: Mostly Martha, Mostly Great Summary: 5 Stars
My wife picked this movie from one of those dvd-by-mail services. To be honest, I did not know what to expect, a German movie about two chefs who fall in love at some point did not sound the least bit cool. I was very pleasantly surprised as a result of watching this movie. It was very good, from the acting to the storyline. It was not so boring that I had to find something else to do. From seeing the previews of the Zeta-Jones movie that is coming out soon, I can say that the original is far more worthy of your attention. Get it and have a good time!!!!
Movie Review: A wonderful movie you shouldn't miss Summary: 5 Stars
What an enjoyable movie. The plot is predictable and the cynical among us might think it trite but this movie transcends the ordinary by virtue of the wonderful and nuanced performances by Martina Gedeck and Sergio Castellitto and a soundtrack featuring Paolo Conte that perfectly complements the mood of the movie. Of the many foreign films I've purchased in the past few years, this is absolutely my favorite. I rarely watch a movie several times in one year, but this is one that I have watched at least 3 times and enjoy it more each time.
