Movie Reviews of Mostly Martha

Movie Review: Subtle directing, sublime acting and soundrack,
Summary: 5 Stars

I'd like to add to what others have said about this film that (a) the acting is wonderful (especially Martina Gedeck as Martha and Maxime Foerste as Lina) and (b) the soundtrack is absolutely sublime.

In fact, the reason I bought the DVD was that reportedly there was quite a lot of Keith Jarrett on the soundtrack, and there is, to great effect. Material from the Norwegian Quartet, the Bregenz solo concert and the trio albums Tribute and Standards Volume 2 is all used, and it combines with the film quite beautifully.

But in the end, it wasn't just the soundtrack that entranced me, but the whole film. And anyone who buys into the absurd stereotype of the lack of German humour should see this to realise how wrong they are.

WOnderful!

Movie Review: What a Wonderful Film !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I waited so long to see this movie because it never reached our area theaters. Sometimes anticipation like mine results in disappointment when I finally see the film, but not this time. I LOVED "Mostly Martha".

This is a feel-good movie without being sappily sentimental or overwrought. It was what I would characterize as soft and gentle, making its points without overly dramatizing any aspects. Its moments of levity were perfectly placed and balanced within the film

The acting in this film was just wonderful....every actor was so natural in his or her part. The "unfolding" of Martha and of her niece Lina was done in an incredibly deft and believable way. It was wonderful to watch them warm up and become more emotional.

I cannot recommend this movie highly enough!

Movie Review: A food movie about people.
Summary: 5 Stars

Bella Martha is a remarkable food movie in an uncommon way. While you're not going to come away from it quite as hungry as many others, because it doesn't focus visually on the food, it's remarkable in its characterization of restaurant people. Martha is neurotic in many ways that overlap with chefs I've worked under: the OCD, the not eating, the awkward people skills. So if what you're looking for in a 'food movie' is mouth-watering shots of the food, this isn't it, but the characters are remarkable, and it's a great story as well. Unfortunately, as a German-speaking friend I watched it with told me, the subtitles are kinda crap. But it's not the minutiae of the plot that makes this movie good, though the overall writing is excellent.

Movie Review: Why can't I purchase this anymore?
Summary: 5 Stars

I love "Mostly Martha". It is a great movie for "foodies" and anyone who loves superb acting. I have purchased this movie for 5 people. I made my most recent purchase last week. I was so disappointed to discover that the only copy I could purchase was used. It was a former BlockBuster copy and had many scratches. I asked the recipient to please let me know if it is defective. It cost me $15 and I hope that it works.

One of my friends said that she cannot even get a rental copy from netflix. What a huge disappointment. I'm hoping it has nothing to do with the horrible American knock off, "No Reservation".

If anyone is in the know on how and where to purchase new copies for a reasonable price, I'd love to hear from you!
