Movie Review: Disappointingly Familiar

The Bottom Line:
The first 30 minutes or so of this drama/comedy, as Robin Williams defects to America and faces quite the culture shock in his new country are quite engaging and amusing, which makes it all the more depressing when the film reverts to a standard, tired film about his relationship with Maria Conchito Alonso; Moscow on the Hudson worth a look if can you relate to the experiences portrayed in the first half, but it's just not a very good movie.

Vladimir Ivanoff (Williams), a circus saxophonist, defects from his touring troupe in Bloomingdale's in New York. He moves into the crowded Harlem flat of a black security guard and begins to adjust to life in the USA.Genre: Feature Film-Comedy

Robin Williams in his fuzzy, sensitive mode with bittersweet touches plays a musician in a Russian circus who gets talked into defecting by a pal and does so (though the pal bails on him at the last minute)--in the middle of Bloomingdale's. A great concept, to be sure, but writer-director Paul Mazursky doesn't seem to know where to go from there. Williams winds up living in the same kind of poverty that he did in Russia, casting about for a way to make a living while both wallowing and drowning in the sudden tidal wave of freedom. Mazursky wants to make a point about how little we appreciate what we have, but he fails to entertain in the process--or at least to engage in a consistent way. --Marshall Fine
