Movie Reviews of Moon Over Parador

Movie Review: Moon Over Parador
Summary: 5 Stars

President of Parador Alphonse Simms greets an actor Jack Noah (both played by Richard Dreyfuss) finishing up a movie in a Latin American country. The actor shows his talent for mimicking the president. Naturally the people that really run the country, including the chief of the secret police Roberto Strausmann (Raul Julia), are observing this. After the president dies from overindulging in the local food and drink called "Puma" The actor is persuasively recruited to keep the country stable.

Will he survive being their puppet leader or does he with the help of the leaders' estranged girlfriend (Sonia Braga Brazilian actress) gain a social conscious?

Take the time to look at the list of actors in the movie as even thought a hand full take the show, there are many major (and minor) popular actors in this movie. Just a few are:
Dana Delany as Becky in "Housesitter" (1992).
Richard Dreyfuss as Roy Neary in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977).
Raul Julia as Archbishop Oscar Romero in "Romero" (English Version) (1989).
Jonathan Winters, as Whoppa Chopper Pilot/Ohio Cop with Bullhorn/Jeb in Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000).

There is some Social redeeming value in this movie and a lot of one liners.

Viva Max! [VHS] ~ Jonathan Winters

Movie Review: Died Laughing
Summary: 5 Stars

over Sonia Braga's exagerrated grind on imposter/dictator Dreyfuss's prone form while she works out her speech about their "friendship." More death when Charo lisped "a delicioushh break-pass" poised charmingly with her cart. The women in this comedy were terrific --the men were up to the challenge. I think Dreyfuss is in one of his best roles here. I can't speak for Raul Julia, since this is the only movie I've seen him in. Tim Conway shows up here in a role that suits him perfectly. The movie keeps up a good comedic pace -- you are either smiling or laughing fit to split your sides. Still, my favorite line in the whole movie is serious. Delivered by Sonia Braga: "To be alive is dangerous." It's all GREAT -- a not-to-be-missed laugher for everyone and anyone.

Movie Review: Richard Dreyfuss
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not a big Richard Dreyfuss fan. In fact most of the time I can't stand his brand of overacting. However, he kills in this crazy farce. Along the lines of Kevin Kline's "Dave", Dreyfuss finds himself the perfect double for a deceased president. However, in this case it is a dictator in a volatile third world country. The slapstick is dead on hilarious and the dialogue brilliant. You will find yourself quoting the movie as part of your daily conversation. I first saw this movie on TV about 16 years ago and fell in love with it. I searched several times over the years to find a copy of it and finally this year hit the jackpot on Amazon. You can't go wrong with this comedy.

Movie Review: Mazursky's Funniest Film
Summary: 5 Stars

Say what you want about "Down And Out In Beverly Hills", but for me, "Moon Over Parador" is by far Paul Mazursky's funniest film. The reason? Raul Julia and Sonia Braga. Whether comedy or drama, Julia [who, sadly, passed away in 1994] and Braga were Hollywood's most underrated cinema duo. They were both denied much deserve Oscar nods for their incredible performances in "Kiss Of The Spider Woman", and not given nearly enough credit for their comedic skills in "Parador".

Richard Dreyfus is supposedly the "star" of "Parador", but it's Julia and Braga who carry this little gem!

Movie Review: Dreyfuss and Julia at their best
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, the movie is GREAT! Richard Dreyfuss and Raul Julia are superb! I think Dreyfuss is a truly unrated actor of both drama (Mr. Holland's Opus) and comedy (this flick, What About Bob?, etc.). As for Raul Julia his talent was barely being exploited before his untimely death.
Get this flick...it is awesome...and funny...especially when they store the dictator's body in the freezer!
