Movie Reviews of Moon Over Miami

Movie Review: fine Hollywood musical with words and music
Summary: 5 Stars

Moon Over Miami is a delightful musical romp that succeeds very well even though the plot is rather thin. The convincing acting held my attention very well and the musical numbers are excellent. The Technicolor is grand and the plot moves along at a good pace.

The action starts when Kay Latimer (Betty Grable), her sister Barbara (Carol Landis), and their aunt Susan (Charlotte Greenwood) are stuck working at some dumpy greasy spoon in Texas. Their inheritance is far short of what they expected; so they pack up and go to Miami to find rich husbands. It's not long before they meet eligible bachelors including Phil 'Mac' McNeil (Don Ameche) and Jeff Bolton (Robert Cummings). They also meet Jack O'Hara (Jack Haley), a waiter at their swanky hotel who find out that the women are really gold diggers and who is constantly threatening to tell the men that the women are out for rich husbands and practically nothing more.

Of course, this being a musical from the golden age of Hollywood, the plot is basically an excuse for song and dance numbers. "You Started Something" is definitely one of the better musical numbers; and look for some incredible dance routines with Betty Grable and two men at the hotel party given by Jeff Bolton. There is another spectacular dance routine at the Bolton's island home near the end of the movie as well.

Despite numerous plot twists and turns, some of which are predictable, the action builds up and there's a little bit of suspense along the way anyhow. In addition, questions remain: Will Jack the waiter ever tell anyone that these women are really gold diggers? Will Kay, her sister Barbara and her aunt Susan ever find true love--or will they merely wind up marrying for money--if they marry at all? No plot spoilers here, folks--watch the movie and find out!

The DVD has no real extras although there is some trailer footage from other Betty Grable movies. The choreography is wonderful in the dance scenes and the cinematography always reflects good judgment.

Overall, Moon Over Miami is an excellent movie musical from the golden age of Hollywood. I highly recommend this film for fans of classic musicals and the actors in this very well done picture.

Movie Review: Betty's best dancing.
Summary: 5 Stars

Dan Dailey once remarked that Betty Grable was "lazy" and loathe to learn difficult routines once she was number one at the box office. But that was in the late 40's and it's definately not so here.

Still working her way to the top, and with no luxury to plead any disinclination, Hermes Pan really puts her through her paces.

Here she is paired with both the Condos Brothers, and then none other than Mr. Pan himself--each time to superb results!

"You Started Something" is a joyous explosion of intricate stepping performed on a tropical patio. No laziness on evidence here. And just about as impressive is the Conga routine where she demonstrates a variety of terpsichorean felicities--(all with trademark shimmy intact).

Then there's "Seminole," a display of amazing speed and agility by the Condos Brothers which proves once and for all that Michael Jackson did not invent the reverse slide.

Add lavish settings, effective location shots, hummable tunes, glamourous gowns, (not to mention the considerable visual charms of Carole Landis) and you have the perfect Technicolor celluloid parfait.

Unquestionably one of Miss Grable's best.

Movie Review: Moon Over Miami is a Technicolor Musical Delight!
Summary: 5 Stars

Moon Over Miami ranks at the top of the list of Betty Grable musicals. This beautiful Technicolor, musical remake of Three Blind Mice stars Betty Grable, Carole Landis, Don Ameche, Robert Cummings, Charlotte Greenwood and Jack Haley. This is the story of three women who pool their resources and head to Florida to find a millionaire husband for one of them. It would be remade again as Three Little Girls In Blue (in Atlantic City) and once again as How To Marry A Millionaire (in New York). Betty Grable's dance with Hermes Pan is amazing and one of the best moments in her long career.

Movie Review: BETTY GRABLE always gets FIVE STARS ...or more....
Summary: 5 Stars

This is another 1940's Fox musical...not "Westside Story"...so if you
enjoy bright, colorful, pleasant...you will not be disappointed. BETTY
and her gang will sing for you. Betty and the Condos brothers will dance
for you....and Betty will wear some very pretty clothes (Travis Banton,
I think). Also unusual for a Grable film...they did some location shooting in Florida...so you get some unusal locations. Betty is a
wonderful entertainer...and I am always willing to take a chance. I
have never been sorry. I hope you never will, either.

Movie Review: Carole Landis Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

Betty Grable is wonderful and in Technicolor to boot! My eyes though stay riveted on the vastly underrated and sadly forgotten Carole Landis. A gorgeous big hearted gal who was used abused and chewed up by Hollywood that eventually led her to taking her own life. I've read that Betty Grable did not like Carole at all and treated her very badly on the films they worked on together. Yet you'd never know it from their great performances here. I agree that this is Bettys best! The only thing missing is wonderful Carmen Miranda! A Technicolor Treat!
