Movie Reviews of Monsoon WeddingMovie Review: Three movies in one; such a deal! A blizzard of colors Summary: 5 Stars
Mira Nair's 'Monsoon Wedding' is a blizzard of vibrant colors: yellows, reds and oceans of orange dominate the screen. What a joy to see this film on the big screen. As the title indicates, you get a wedding in monsoon here. But you also get two other tales expertly woven into the fabric of the movie by director Nair. First, there's a tale of incest and taboo that breaks out into the open at a very inopportune time. Then, there's a 'meet cute and marry quick' tale between the wedding planner and a family servant. That might be the best part of the movie. At the very least, Vijay Raaz's wedding planner "P.K. Dubey" is the film's most compelling character. With his gawky physical presence and staccato delivery, he stands out in every scene he's in.
Movie Review: Monsoon Wedding Summary: 5 Stars
This exhilarating Punjabi comedy of manners by the talented Mira Nair ("Salaam Bombay!") fuses Bollywood-style antics (and one extravagant dance sequence!) with crisp social observation. As chaos consumes the tradition-minded Verma and Rai clans, all bets are off--and some new ones are made--on who's pairing up with whom. Declan Quinn's roving camera spotlights the large and eccentric cast, but standouts are Shah and Vijay Raaz, the marigold-chewing nuptials planner who has eyes on a comely maid. Addressing the collision between West and East, as well as class difference in the hustle and bustle of modern Delhi, "Monsoon" is a buoyant, multifaceted comedy/drama that's as thoughtful and rich as a weighty novel.
Movie Review: Off the beaten path for me Summary: 5 Stars
Normally, this wouldn't be a DVD that I would pick off the shelf, but I have heard good things about it, and decided to get it. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good movie and I couldn't believe that it was almost 2 hours long....it didn't drag at all. Maybe just the smallest bit slow in starting, but the people were so interesting I knew it would probably get better, and it did. Interesting backdrop in Delhi....I can't imagine the crowding and the heat in India. Part of their culture is different, of course, but we have a lot in common. I liked the fact that there were several stories going on, and all loose ends got tied up. I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants a break in the ordinary.
Movie Review: This is what movie-making is all about. Summary: 5 Stars
As the movie slowly navigated its way through the introductory scenes, I began to think I was in for one of those boring international films with all the excitement of sludge drying. But as the plot developed and the characters became more comprehensible, it became a truly exciting and heart-touching production. It is one of those special gems that can be watched over and over, with new facets and insights coming out in every viewing. Let's be clear about this. Monsoon Wedding is about relationships rather car chases and exotic weaponry. But I can honestly say, watching this movie was one of the most exhilirating and heartwarming experiences I have had in a very long time.
Movie Review: Wow Summary: 5 Stars
When I first bought this DVD I was expecting another happy/sad overemotional Bollywood, which I have no problem with. I had no idea this was an art film and was accordingly surprised. While not what I expected, this was a great movie. It had a lot to say about what can go on behind the scenes in an Indian wedding. There are actually two romantic stories in the movie, one an upper class and a lower class romance. Both are exceedingly sweet. The wedding planner is the comic relief and is hilarious. There are two adult topics in the movie extramarital affairs and child molestation. This movie was made to make a point and does so in a great fashion
