Movie Reviews of Monsoon WeddingMovie Review: Stunning, visually and emotionally Summary: 5 Stars
One of the things that struck me about "Monsoon Wedding" was the colors of the film. There are electric colors everywhere: the orange of the marigold flowers, the exotic saris the women wear, the green of the foliage, the beautiful wedding tent. All these colors assault the viewer's eye in the most pleasurable of ways. Another excellent part of the film was the way Mira Nair explored relationships, both familial relationships [cousins, father to son] and male-female relationships [the married couples]. I thought the different relationships among the male-female couples was especially interesting. The actors did a very good job, making me believe that I was watching a documentary of a family, not a movie about a "staged" family. I also enjoyed the mix of Punjab and English spoken in the film. It made the movie that much more realistic, as the characters switched effortlessly between the two languages in conversation. This movie seems to only reinforce my theory that foreign films are way better than American movies. I strongly and highly recommend this movie to everyone. You will enjoy it whole-heartedly!!
Movie Review: Hey, it's true Summary: 5 Stars
When Mira Nair does her "director's commentary" on the DVD, she says that watching this movie is "like being at her dinner table for two hours," so close is this to her own experience of being in an upper middle class, westernized Punjabi family in Delhi.
I wondered how this could be so, as it doesn't correspond with popular conceptions of India today. Don't get me wrong--I found it hilarious, touching, visually beautiful--but I did wonder if it could be reality in any way. After the harsh truthfulness of, say, SALAAM BOMBAY!, had Nair completely gotten away from her documentary roots?
But when I was in Delhi I met families exactly like this, and saw exactly how representative of a certain type of modern Indian family this is. I am so glad that this different slice of life is well represented by this beautiful film.
The actors are brilliant, both the well-known actors and the first-timers. The actor who plays the wedding planner is particularly fun to watch. Definitely worth seeing.
Movie Review: modern Shakespeare Summary: 5 Stars
This film has received enough positive reviews without my adding my 2 cents. However, I would like to make the point that this movie is closer to a Shakespearean comedy than any other modern film I've seen (although I don't watch films as often as some). Although the theme of incest is darker and more serious than the gender-bending found in some of Shakespeare's plays, it is of a kind with them, I believe. The bad guy is identified without a bloodthirsty revenge seen. The servants' subplot has about the same relation to the whole you would expect in Shakespeare. The humor is spontaneous and doesn't warp the characters, and at the end of the film, you feel you've watched something original that is affirmative, yet not manipulative. Highly recommended. I suppose the actual dialog won't appeal as much as the Bard's to those with a critical mindset, but for the rest of us who have just enjoyed ourselves, this film is a great experience.
Movie Review: a mulitifaceted masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
Monsoon wedding is a wonderfully realised piece of story telling about all sides of the human experience: love, passion, lies, deception, rage, denial, truth, integrety, joy, humor to name a few. The gifted director , Mira Nair, is in full command of her craft as she builds the multilayered story which spins around the preparations of a glitzy, colorfully flamboyant traditional Indian wedding ceremony. There are quite a few characters involved in their own mini dramas to track, but miss Nair handles the complex narrative beautifully , weaving the many lives and issues into a seamlessly rich emotional experience and never neglecting to explore the darkest depths of our human behavior, complete with the very painful consequences that often follows. The superb art direction and photography only heightens the uniquely colorful way of indian life and gloriously ancient customs. You'll be charmed, entertained and possibly moved to tears.
Movie Review: The "Other" 1% of Bollywood creations....... Summary: 5 Stars
I saw "Monsoon Wedding" a couple of years back in New York's Paris Cinema that had a sophisticated sound system and comfy seating. When the credits rolled, nobody, I repeat, nobody got up to leave. I myself was transfixed to my seat consumed by a lot of emotions!
First, "Salaam Bombay", then this! Expatriate Indian directors like Mira Nair seemingly are aware of the India I personally experienced growing up where children are all too often abused emotionally, psychologically and sadly sexually too - while the rest live in constant denial.
This movie may open up deeply buried painful memories and old wounds that could compel those abused to relive their own trauma of betrayal. However, while some of those affected can move on trusting others - no matter how painful their memories, others are emotionally maimed for life.
See Monsoon Wedding, so that history is not repeated - if we can help it.
