Movie Reviews of Mobile Suit Gundam - The Red Comet (Vol. 2)

Movie Review: Char's story is starting to unfold
Summary: 4 Stars

Where as the first disc of MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM focussed on the WhiteBases struggle to get to Earth, disc 2 opens us up to the mysterious character Char and his past, particularily a past that involves the family of his friend Garma Zabi, the son of Zeon's ruler Degwin Sodo Zabi. Char in almost every episode here has his own little thoughts as he builds his plans of a revenge. Garma is in charge of most of Earth's forces and must stop the Whitebase from escaping into safe territory with his fleet of fighter jets, tanks and his own flying fortress style carrier.

Meanwhile on Whitebase, the endless fighting is taking it's toll on Amuro who loses the want to go and fight and even reaches a boiling point with Bright the Whitebase commander. Amuro wants the war to end and even witnesses refuges stealing food from the others in these desperate times. Sad.

Even with the same number of episodes on the disc, it moves at a slightly slower pace particularily with two "throwaway" episodes one involving Amuro to try and get a message out to Fed HQ in his fighter (Kai by the way was never a bigger jerk) and in another has Whitebase attempting a seace fire to help evacuate their refugees (This one at least is entertaining, with one of the nicest Zeon pilots you'll meet). The final two are both great and episode 10 culminates on how far Char will go for his own plans. If not for the two middle episodes I mentioned and the slower pace, this might have gotten 5 stars. Oh well, good disk anyhow and the best is still coming.

Summary of Mobile Suit Gundam - The Red Comet (Vol. 2)

Universal Century 0079. The Gundam and the White Base become the primary target of the Zeon Forces. Char Aznable, the Zeon ace pilot, is very interested in the Gundam and it's abilities, while Garma, one of the commanders of the Zeon forces, makes it his personal mission to capture the Gundam. Chased across the galaxy and around the Earth, Amuro and the rest of the White Base crew begin to lose hope. The war seems endless, but the fighting continues...
Although not initially a success, Yoshiyuki Tomino's landmark mecha series Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) eventually sparked a craze that has lasted more than two decades. The slow pacing, limited animation, drawn effects, and tame battles are closer in tone to Robotech (1985) than to the more recent incarnations of Gundam and feel surprisingly dated. Personal relationships, including an ill-starred romance, play out against the struggle between the Zeon and Federation forces. Zeon Commander Garma and ace pilot Char are daunted to discover just how powerful the Gundam is both in airborne and hand-to-hand terrestrial combat. Despite his success, an exhausted Amuro begins to doubt his mission, before recovering and fighting his way to victory. The war takes an unexpected turn when Char proves willing to betray his friends to increase his own glory. Rated 13 Up, suitable for younger viewers: Brief nudity and mild violence, mostly machine versus machine. --Charles Solomon
