Movie Review: God I Hate Kira!!!
Summary: 4 Stars
Disc problems have been reported with this volume in several other reviews. Bandai has had problems like this before like when they first started releasing Gundam Wing on DVD. Still my rating is just for the material on the disc. Anyway after the average fifth volume we start off with a battle of epic proportions.
Kira Yamato arrvies on the scene with the Freedom Gundam followed by Cagalli in her Strike Rouge. With her naive sentiments and foolish optimism she expects the Orb Forces to stop attacking ZAFT and go home just because she tells them to. She abandoned the political process and left her country in a Rogue ship and she honestly expected them to listen to her. Of coures part of their refusal is because of Yuna. Above all else I can't stand Kira! I'm not one for defending Cagalli, but Kira ridiculing her for not being able to stop Orb for joining the Atlantic Federation was just low. He's one to talk, what did he, Lacus, Waltfeld and Ramius think would happen if they lead a rebellion, stopped the war and then just left it at that? Lacus didn't return to the Plants to take responsibility for her actions after the war and hid on earth with Kira in Orb. At least Cagalli was doing something to help maintain peace, which is harder than attaining it for the past two years. Kira, Lacus, Ramius and Waltfeld did nothing and then had the nerve to come back all High and Mighty all over again. Did they honestly expect the world to fix itself on its own? I might have sympathy for them if they payed a price for their stance again or at least struggled in battle, but Kira magically defeated everyone, without killing them no less. A little to convient and powerful if you ask me.
In the second episode Athrun who isn't thrilled with Kira's actions arranges a meeting with him and Cagalli through an old friend, Miriallia. This is the one time when Athrun really seems like he truly wants to be with ZAFT. While Kira has a point about not trusting Durandal he has little credability because he and the Archangel are really playing it by ear. They want to stop the world from being at war, but it's obvious their loyalties are to Orb. How do they expect people to listen to them if their loyalties always go to Orb by default? I wanted Athrun to hit Kira after he pretty much stated that those who are lost in battle will never come back, ultimately telling Athrun to get over the losses. Gee I seem to recall how he almost killed Athrun after he watched Tolle die and the he did actually kill Rau Le Creuset after he killed Flay. I wonder if Kira would be saying those words if Lacus died? Once again Kira has yet to pay any price for his actions. Kira: "I don't want to kill anymore and I will not let others kill," so in other words he's given himself the title of God. At least in the original Gundam Seed he had to kill people every once and awhile once he left the Earth Forces because he wasn't all powerful. Now he's unstoppable and in his mind he can do no wrong since he isn't killing anyone, man he's frusterating! At this point I couldn't care less about Athrun and Cagalli's relationship, though it's left open-ended.
The third episode puts the spotlight back on Shinn who along with Rey discovers a labratory that was run by Blue Cosmos, the Earth Forces. This sheds some light on the three Earth Forces Gundam pilots, Orga, Shani and Clotho who were introduced towards the end of the original Gundam Seed. Like the three current Gundam pilots, Sting, Stella and Auel they are super humans created through drugs and other forms of experimentation in order to compete with Coordinators. As far as the Earth Forces are concerned they are disposable human beings, their only reason for existance is to fight. This is why all the scientists and other test subjects were all left dead because they Earth Forces planned to blow the lab up to cover their tracks. We learn that like Stella, Auel has a trigger word, mother. Apparantly his mother died somehow in the lab. I wonder if Sting has one to. The overall story surrounding these three is just as vague than Orga, Shani and Clotho were. Rather than waste time on flashback episodes they could've done a side story on Stella, Auel and Sting. What actually happened to Stella to make her go crazy? How did Auel's mother die? What's the story with Sting? The end of this episode marks another highlight in the series. Shinn discovers who the pilot of the Gaia Gundam is.
The last episode is the weakest one in the volume. Shinn is my favorite character, but I don't like were they took his relationship with Stella. It was a little to 'Romeo & Juliet' for my taste. He put his military career on the line for a girl he barely knew. I wonder if Stella killing one of his comrads in battle crossed his mind? The second half of the episode deals with Lacus returning to the Plants with the help of Waltfeld to investigate whats going on. At the end of this episode we're introduced to the third closing theme, 'I Wanna Go to a Place" which I really liked.
Really intense volume that you got to check out if you haven't seen the episodes yet. If you like one character in particular you'll probably hate another, the clash between ideologies is really fun. I like Shinn and can't stand Kira and those who like Kira can't stand Shinn.
Summary of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny: Volume 06
The fierce naval battle between the Minerva and the Orb fleet has been interrupted by the sudden appearance of the Archangel and the Freedom Gundam. However, the battlefield continues to descend into chaos, with tragic consequences. After the battered Minerva withdraws to a friendly port, Athrun leaves the ship to search for the Archangel to confront his former allies. As he listens to their revelations, Athrun is forced to choose between his faith in Chairman Durandal and his friendship with Kira and Cagalli. Genre: Action/Sci-Fi/Mecha.Television DVD Video
