Movie Reviews of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny, Vol. 5

Movie Review: Durandal and Stella
Summary: 3 Stars

While this is the weakest of the volumes so far in my opinion there still is some fun to be had. There's some action, but not the kind involving Mobile Suits. At least not until the last few minutes of the fourth episode.

The first episode raised some interesting prospects, but still not one of my favorite episodes. We are able to briefly get into Chairman Durandal's head. Being one of the most gray characters in the series at this point it is difficult to peg him. He's intelligent and organized, but also minipulative and ambitious. He always manages to have the Minerva right where he wants it to be, affecting the morale of the crewmembers. Oh yeah and then there's the attempted assassination of Lacus Clyne and having a double of her in place for propaganda purposes. We finally hear the name Logos which is the organization responsible for creating Blue Cosmos. The leader is that guy we've seen briefly from time to time with the purple lips, Djibril. Another thing is the character Rey who I never really noticed until this episode. When he hugged Durandal with that big smile on his face it was like, "Who is that? Oh it's Lunamaria's blonde sidekick, Rey I think his name is!" For a moblie suit pilot of the Minerva his role has been really small up to this point.

The main reason why I gave this volume a lower rating than the others was the second episode which was a flashback episode narrorated by Shinn. We see a few new clips of Shinn with his family in Orb, An Orb soldier briefly speaking to Shinn in a shelter after his family's death, and of Shinn, Lunamaria and Rey at the ZAFT academy. However the other 99% of it we've already seen. I hate flashback episodes!

The third episode opens with a funny scene of Athrun finding Meer in his bed and then her opening up the door to greet Lunamaria who in turn is mad at Athrun. The rest of the episode is about Shinn first meeting Stella. I won't get into it, but I have to say the way these two meet was just a bit to similar to Athrun and Cagalli for my taste.

The last episode is the best one with another battle about to ensue. The leader of Logos, Djibril decides to make Orb get its hands dirty by making the nation help with the next attack on the Minerva. This naturally concerns Athrun and ticks off Shinn. I've already stated that I don't like that they made Yuna a villian mainly on the basis that he went against Cagalli. Still they could've at least made him a fun villian instead of pure arrogant, idiotic, whiny man. I thought it was really stupid that the Orb military had to listen to a politician with no idea how the battlefield works. Another interesting bit is that the Earth Forces are capable of tampering with, erasing the memories of the pilots, Sting, Stella and Auel. Neo Roanoke is an interesting character, though not as much as Rau Le Creuset.

This volume is essential for those who haven't yet seen this show yet and want to keep going. Still I recommend if you get this volume you get the sixth as well because the cliffhanger at the end of the fourth episode is a big one! You'll be dieing to see what happens next!
