Movie Reviews of Miss PotterMovie Review: nice tearjerker, worth owning Summary: 5 Stars
It's a nice movie, a tear jerker and a nostalgia prompting one.
It's about Beatrix Potter, the writer of the children's stories which were my first books as well as my kids.
It presents a sympathetic young woman, gifted in both art and nature observation who becomes a patron of the rural community in England and donates her life's work to the National Trust.
There is a side line of unfulfilled love and longing, a father who doesn't understand but encourages her and a social ladder climbing mom.
But most of the movie is taken up with getting her first book into print and the struggles of a single talented, somewhat shy and reluctant woman writer/artist to show the world what she can do.
There are too few people like her in our world, i hope the movie encourages young girls to emulate her and find their own way in the world, not necessarily the accepted and dominant one.
worth owning and sitting down with friends to watch and discuss over late night coffee.
Movie Review: Charming and engaging Summary: 5 Stars
I was thoroughly charmed by Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor in this movie. Zellweger's role as the beleaguered Beatrix who must deal with an overbearing and critical mother and a weak father was beautifully acted and quite engaging. McGregor was appealing as the suitor in love, and the authenticity of the sets and costumes enabled the viewer to feel a part of the era. The movie hinted that Beatrix might have a touch of insanity, with animated paintings and her occasional appearance of confusion, but this is never brought out definitively. I knew nothing of Beatrix Potter's life before watching the movie, but I came away with respect for her tenacity and courage, as well as compassion for the pain she suffered. This is a movie well worth watching, and both Zellweger and McGregor bring a vitality and depth to it that make it compelling. The real Beatrix Potter's delightful paintings are featured prominently to great effect, and all told the movie provides a great viewing experience.
Movie Review: Miss Potter - a life of courage and beauty Summary: 5 Stars
The quiet introduction of a watercolorist at work, sparkling with swirls of vivid color, set the mood for this wonderful, gentle film. The settings were a feast for the eyes, and the story development moved at an satisfactorily eighteenth century pace, but the impeccable characters, wonderfully played, are the life-blood of this movie. The brisk energy of Beatrix [Zellweger], the engaging smile of Norman Warne [MacGregor], and the directness and kindness of Millie [Watson] created a marvelous chemisty. In joy and in sorrow, each character rang true. Though a less central character, Lloyd Owens adds value in his role as Willie Heelis as well. Potter's indomitable spirit, however, is what keeps this movie from sinking into mere romanticism. In spite of pain, disapproval, and deep loss, she found happiness in her art and in her determination to live life forward. It is more than a feel-good movie; it is an inspiration to courageous living wrapped in delightful artistry.
Movie Review: CAPTIVATING BIOGRAPHY OF BEATRIX POTTER Summary: 5 Stars
I recently saw Miss Potter and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The biography of Miss Beatix Potter, author of Peter Rabbit and many other children's stories, is brilliantly executed by Renee Zellweger.
The story of her life, her writing and her drawings - which become animated at times throughout the film - is captured beautifully by Zellweger.
A fiercely independent woman, who is still residing with her parents, she has created a few note worthy stories and magnificent illustrations for them. She is approached by two gentlemen brothers (Ewan McGregor who is one of them), in the publishing business. As her stories become quite successful, the film deals with Miss Potter dealing with her newfound success and the relationship that flourishes between her and McGregor.
Great characterization by Zellweger, idyllic settings, a great musical score and superb acting makes MISS POTTER an instant hit in my book! Enjoy!
Movie Review: Inspiration for young artists and writers Summary: 5 Stars
Plenty of reviews on this site testify to the marvelous quality of this film, and its extraordinary performances. And there is no doubt that the film is a pure delight to watch. What I want to point out is that this is an excellent film for young writers and artists, as it is the story of how a young woman with considerable talent fights for recognition and finally receives it. Her story is exceptional, but then again it is not, because writers and artists do achieve success all the time. However the struggles of the beginning artist are considerable, and the need for faith throughout one's career never ends. I heartily recommend this film to anyone who wants to write, to paint, to dance, to sing, to do anything creative, and especially to those who are up against opposition from family and friends. . You will find the film comforting and affirming. And as others have indicated here, its an extraordinarily fine and wondrously enjoyable film.
