Movie Reviews of Miss Potter

Movie Review: Gifted Children should see this movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a recently retired elementary school teacher. I feel bright, gifted children would get a lot out of this movie. Beatrix Potter did not "fit then norm" and so it is so very often the case of gifted children. They actually often "beat up on themselves" for being different than the average person/child. I think they will identify with Beatrix's early giftedness in drawing and her intense devotion to it and her insistence to follow it. So often gifted children are trying to be "pushed" into the world's mold of average, almost as Beatrix was, and they do NOT fit into the average mold, quite the opposite , their mindS think " out of the box", very different from most people and yet it is from these gifted children and people that we get our great discoveries in all fields. Think of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and many others who made discoveries that have greatly added to the quality of our lives. They were the persistent gifted ones who refused to be pushed by the world into the average mold ! Who would you like to do brain surgery on your brain tumor ? Personally, I'd like to have those "out of the box thinkers" be encouraged and thus they might become that brain surgeon. They are born with giftedness, let us encourage it and GIVE THEM WINGS TO FLY :)

Movie Review: Beautiful Beatrix
Summary: 5 Stars

Growing up in the middle an Illinois cornfield I was more a "Chicken Little" and "My Friend Flicka" type of kid. It wasn't until as an adult and moved to the big city of Peoria that I was introduced to the delightful Beatrix Potter.

In this DVD, "Miss Potter", her life is fictionalized to fit the big screen's time allottment and format thereby taking creative license with much of her true biography. Purism aside, it is a beautiful, lush and imaginative film filled with gorgeous period costumes, manners, morales, and scenery. Her country home in the Lake District is so visually stunning it makes watching this film worth it, even if you were to dislike the rest of the movie. Rene Zellweger and Ewan MacGregor fill out their roles beautifully as does the supporting cast especially Emily Watson as MacGregor's sister and Barbara Flynn and Bill Patterson as Beatrix's parents.

Although rated "PG" I would not have a problem watching it with younger children and Seniors as I found nothing in poor taste. The fact that it is a movie the whole family can gather round and enjoy is worth a star on its own merit.

Enjoy the movie!

Movie Review: Astounding
Summary: 5 Stars

No words do this film the full justice that it so amply deserves. It is emotionally mature, brilliantly acted, superbly directed, and the production is of the highest quality imaginable. I don't know when I've enjoyed a story told with such sensitivity and finesse. It's all the love stories and more that you have been hoping to see. Kudos to all the fine actors and especially to Renée Zellweger as Miss Potter, Ewan McGregor as Norman Warne, and Emily Watson. Their mutual chemistry is magic. For that matter, I cannot imagine how the replacement of any one of the supporting cast could have made this a better film. They were all wonderful. The story is a spellbinding fairytale, told in matter of fact dialog with occasional narration and flashback. You never feel that your emotions are being manipulated by the drama, because they are not. It is the true story itself that really grips you and leaves you breathless until the final scene. Finally, the additional material on the DVD is well worth watching. It documents the life of the central character, Beatrix Potter, the real astounding individual who made this film, and so much more, possible.

Movie Review: Heartwarming Family Film
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of our favorite movies. It is a wholesome love story, based on the life of Beatrix Potter and her "bunny story" plus others. The setting is 1902 with crisp, beautiful city and country scenery. Miss Potter is not happy in settling with a husband selected by her mother and maintains her independence, being happy in her drawing and writing. When her first book is accepted for publication, she meets the love of her life Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor), her publisher. Of course, Miss Potter's mother doesn't view him as acceptable and wishes that her daughter wouldn't bring trades people into their home and the story unfolds. The actors are great. I recognized some actors from another favorite - Lorna Doone. You won't want to miss the song that Ewan McGregor sings, when he is teaching Renee Zellweger to dance. Beatrix Potter gave 4,000 acres of land to the people of Britain when she died, saving it from developers. The only negative that others who have seen the film have to offer is that some have a problem with Renee Zellweger's facial expressions and find them distracting. I didn't find this to be a problem for me and loved all of the expressions.

Movie Review: A fantastic movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English author and illustrator, who is best remembered for her Peter Rabbit stories. However, Miss Potter was so much more. She was an imaginative and somewhat headstrong child, who loved nature, she stood up for herself at a time when women were expected to marry up and become model wives, and in later years she championed the cause of conservation, donating some 4,000 acres to the National Trust - the largest gift it ever received.

This wonderfully entertaining movie tells the story of Beatrix Potter (ably played by Renee Zellweger), her love of life and nature, her romances, and the course she plotted for herself. Overall, I think that this is a fantastic movie! Unlike what you would expect from a Hollywood production, this movie is actually true to the story of Miss Potter, not embellishing, not altering, but letting her interesting life speak for itself.

This is a great movie, one that is both entertaining and yet inspirational. So, if you are looking for a great little movie, one that will thrill you, then get this movie. My family and I give it our highest recommendations!
