Movie Reviews of Miss PotterMovie Review: Can't Find Any Faults With This Involving, Sweet Film Summary: 5 Stars
Wow, what a wonderful film. It's almost shocking to see these days - a genuinely nice, but not sappy, film. It's the story of Beatrix Potter, the all-time best-selling author of children's books. It's about how she became an author, who helped, who didn't, who encouraged her, who didn't, and who she fell in love with and what happened with him. This is a very involving film, right from the start and it doesn't overstay its welcome at 92 minutes.
This is one of those rare films in which, even in some of its tougher moments, and there were some, had me almost in tears many times. I guess I am hopeless romantic. Anyone who is will treasure this film, male or female. Anyone who appreciates beautiful scenery will treasure this, too. Some of the shots of the English countryside are absolutely stunning. This is a beautiful picture, visually and in story. There really isn't anything to criticize.
Rene Zellweger gives an terrific performance as "Beatrix Potter." She is the second American actor I have heard on screen in the last two months speak with a British accent and do it well enough that I didn't think about it after a short time. (The other was Edward Norton in "The Painted Veil."). Zellweger and Ewan McGregor ("Norman Warne") are about as charming a couple as you will ever see on film. The support from Emily Watson, Barbara Flynn, Bill Patterson and the rest of the cast also is first-rate.
This is about a clean a movie as you'd ever see, too, regarding language and sex. However, I doubt kids wouldn't be interested in this film. It's an adult story.
If you are looking an interesting and emotional hour and a half of entertainment, this comes highly recommended.
Movie Review: delightful story especially inspirational for young ladies. Summary: 5 Stars
Ms. Beatrix Potter is a child of privilege in England at the turn of the century. As such, her role in life is to find an eligible man-that meets to approval of her social climbing mother and to marry. Renee Zelwigger's charming and sensitive portrayal makes you want to cheer her lovingly rebellious nature.
Beatrix rejects all suitors brought to her and instead concentrates on her passion... drawing and stories based upon the animal creatures who she has created from her experiences in the country and her whimsical sense of humor.
Despite her mother's objections, Miss Potter seeks and finds a publisher for her first book. The publishers, a dour pair of brothers, see it as a way to dissuade their youngest brother from his desire to join the business. His failure at publishing, and they firmly believe the book will fail, will send him back to be a companion for their aging mother. This will please both the mother and the older brothers.
Instead, the youngest brother, played most charmingly by Ewan McGregor, helps her to bring to book about a naughty young rabbit to print and a most successful sales record.
While working to publish other of her stories, the couple falls in love. From this point, I hope I have interested you enough that you will want to view this movie for yourself.
Let me just finish by saying, this woman for whom society had one plan, by her strength of character and and purpose, followed her own plan and left a legacy of some of the most beloved children's stories, and from the profits made, save a charming part of the English landscape for all posterity.
Movie Review: Beautiful! Summary: 5 Stars
I can not think of the last time I saw a more beautiful film!
Perhaps I am biased. The film starts out with Beatrix Potter getting her lucky break with the publishing company. I, myself, have just started trying to sell my first novel, so I nearly cried when the publishers said yes to Beatrix.
As Miss Potter drives away in her carriage, trying not to laugh and scream for joy because all she can prim and properly do to celebrate is have the driver go round the park a few extra times, we find out the publishers didn't say yes because they thought Peter Rabbit would sell. They said yes because their little brother, Ewan McGregor, has just joined the firm and they needed an unimportant first project for him to bumble with.
What begins as another story of a writer and artist whose once disdained work becomes wildly popular turns into a very human story of love, friendship, loss, and recovery. The acting was incredible! I believed every minute of it. I could not ask for a better script or a better cast to bring it to life. So why do sloppy films like "Transformers" get in the regular theaters while the brilliant "Miss Potter" is relegated to the art houses? Let's make amends! Buy it today! It goes right up there on your shelf with your favorite Jane Austen movies.
This film is rated PG for some mild language, which I must say I didn't notice. Smaller children will find this film dull, in spite of the lovely animation sequences, but I bet my eleven year old writing, drawing daughter will adore it as much as I did.
Movie Review: a gem Summary: 5 Stars
you can say this movie is perhaps avoiding the much mentioned darker side of miss potter- who seems almost delightfully frothy throughout most of this great bio pic-- u could say mcgregor's performance was a bit superficial---tho there is more chemistry between them here than say between drew barrymore and hugh grant in music and lyrics-- an unwatchable mess of a movie ! but this labor of love-- w a very interesting director's commentary-tho i wish miss zellweger was there to chime in--is probably one of the best movies ive seen recently---- the attention to detail is thrilling actually-- the art direction impeccable ! and ms zellweger-- gives her best performance to date by a long shot---- her sustained performNCE is a revelation---was she even nominated for an oscar?? who remembers ?? but i give her my own right here----and the actors who play her parents--are also so in character so convincing-- so relaxed and nuanced in their work---what goes on between these three actors is just a sheer joy to watch ! very uncommon stuff in any movie---kudos to everyone involved in this charming touching & delightful and very well wrought gem of a movie----i`ve seen this movie 4 times now showing it to different friends---enjoying it more and more each time- i swear!!!beautiful !!!!!!!! i'd like to see the same cast and direcors/producers do chekov's three sisters-- w renee as masha---- and the mother here as the brother's crazy wife who takes over the household--- anyway -- miss potter is golden as they say-----check it out now !! its rich !!
Movie Review: Sad, Slow and Sweet..... Summary: 5 Stars
I walked in and out of the living room while my husband and youngest daughter watched Miss Potter. Animated bunnies and other creatures frolicked across the page and the movie seemed to move along slowly, so, I didn't expect to love it when I actually sat down to watch it.
Instead I was surprised. The cover hints of a great quirky romance. The romance is understated and tragic, but sweet nonetheless. The inexperienced Mr. Warne and Miss Potter fumbled through endearingly. The bigger focus of the film was Beatrix herself. I don't know how I feel about the animated characters that she created in her mind. Part of me is creeped out, but part of me fully understands eccentricities.
The history and customs, the simplicity and society add to the movie. The tragedy sadly unfolds in a time where bad news often arrived too late. This is so foreign to me since anyone I need to talk to can be reached within just a few hours if not minutes so the timing situation added an extra measure of poignancy for me.
This would be a great film for older elementary age girls who get caught up in the fairy tale of Prince Charming since Beatrix follows her heart, hones her talent and leaves behind a world that was better for her presence in it. There is very little "action" and those who can't stand languid films won't be able to sit comfortably through it. History lovers and families looking for family friendly films should find much to like.
